Significado, léxico e usos: as mais-valias de uma abordagem cognitiva

Abstract

Numa altura da história do pensamento científco em que as chamadas Ciências Cognitivas se ramifcam para praticamente todos os domínios, como entender a relação entre a Linguagem e a Cognição? Embora a questão seja de âmbito muito vasto, procurar-se-á, neste texto, abordar principalmente a relação Linguagem, Cognição e Signifcado, mormente ao nível do signifcado lexical. Neste domínio, parece-nos ser de destacar a importância da noção de protótipo como modelo linguístico-cognitivo e, sobretudo, a revolução que o conceito de Metáfora Concetual veio desencadear. Procurar-se-á demonstrar como esta forma de entender as relações entre a cognição e a linguagem permite uma mais autêntica e real atitude científca perante a linguagem humana em uso, o verdadeiro objeto das Ciências da Linguagem

At a time in scientifc thought history when the so-called Cognitive Sciences branch out into almost every domain, how should we understand the relationship between Language and Cognition? Although the question is very broad in scope, in this text we will primarily focus on the relationship between Language, Cognition and Meaning, especially at the level of lexical meaning. In this feld we want to emphasize the importance of the notion of prototype as a linguistic-cognitive model and, above all, the revolution that the concept of Conceptual Metaphor unleashed. We will argue how this way of understanding the relations between the cognition and the language allows for a more authentic and real scientifc attitude about human language in use, the real object of the Sciences of Language.
