Trabalho em emergência e riscos para o bem-estar: o caso dos bombeiros do concelho de Barcelos

Abstract

Os bombeiros Portugueses são um dos pilares da Proteção Civil em Portugal. São indivíduos que desempenham funções, de forma profissional ou voluntária, num corpo de bombeiros cujas funções se centram na proteção e socorro de pessoas, bens e animais, através de prevenção e combate a incêndios, socorro a feridos, doentes e náufragos e outras funções determinadas em legislação específica (Ministério da Administração Interna, 2007). Face às exigências com que se confrontam são expostos a múltiplos riscos potenciadores de sequelas físicas e psicológicas. Como tal, nesta dissertação, pretendemos abordar o modo como é prestado o apoio a estes profissionais. Centramo-nos nas Associações Humanitárias de Bombeiros Voluntários do concelho de Barcelos (Barcelos, Barcelinhos e Viatodos). Pretendemos apurar como é desenvolvido o apoio multidisciplinar aos bombeiros, a perceção que os mesmos têm acerca dos recursos de que dispõem, assim como a possível desigualdade de género presente nestas Associações, onde os padrões de funcionamento e de relações laborais são tradicionalmente masculinizados. Nesta investigação utilizamos o inquérito por questionário e a entrevista semiestruturada como métodos de recolha de informação. Das conclusões deste trabalho, destacamos o facto de haver alguns sinais de que a cultura organizacional dos bombeiros está a mudar. Apesar de ainda persistirem resistências à expressão de emoções, verifica-se que há uma maior abertura por parte destes profissionais no que diz respeito à aceitação de emoções negativas após a vivência de incidentes críticos. Por outro lado, no que diz respeito à presença estereótipos de género, pudemos concluir que ainda persistem algumas atitudes sexistas por parte de bombeiros do sexo masculino, o que demonstra ainda haver alguma resistência por parte dos mesmos no que concerne à plena integração das mulheres neste universo profissional.

Portuguese firefighters are one of the pillars of Civil Protection in Portugal. They are individuals who perform functions, professionally or voluntarily, in a Fire Department whose functions are focused on protecting and helping people, goods and animals, through the prevention and fighting of fires, helping the wounded, sick and shipwrecked and other specific functions in specific legislation (Ministério da Administração Interna, 2007). Faced with the demands that they face, they are exposed to multiple risks that enhance physical and psychological injuries. In this dissertation, we intend to address the way in which support is provided to these professionals. We focus on the Humanitarian Associations of Voluntary Firefighters in the municipality of Barcelos (Barcelos, Barcelinhos and Viatodos). We intend to find out how the multidisciplinary support to firefighters is developed, the perception they have about the resources they have, as well as the possible gender inequality present in these Associations, where the standards of functioning and labor relations are traditionally masculinized. In our field research we conducted a survey and semi-structured interviews as main sources for the gathering of information. From the conclusions of this work, we highlight the fact that there are some signs that the organizational culture of firefighters is changing. Although resistance to the expression of emotions still persists, it appears that there is greater openness on the part of these professionals with regard to the acceptance of negative emotions after experiencing critical incidents. On the other hand, with regard to the presence of gender stereotypes, we could conclude that, on the part of male firefighters, some sexist attitudes still persist, which shows that there is still some resistance on their part regarding the full integration of women in this professional universe.
