No encalço da Quadrilha do Papa Assucar, célebre bando de ladrões e salteadores: um estudo de caso sobre representações de pequena criminalidade em finais de Oitocentos

Abstract

Através de um estudo de caso sobre uma associação criminosa na região de Guimarães em finais de Oitocentos, reconstitui-se e caracteriza-se uma quadrilha de ladrões do ponto de vista da sua génese, composição, atividade e zonas de ação. O primeiro objetivo foi contextualizar e descrever as relações sociais entre a quadrilha, as forças da ordem e a população. O segundo objetivo foi analisar as representações sociais que a quadrilha imprimia na população, a partir dos depoimentos das testemunhas dos processos judiciais, das notícias da imprensa regional e nacional e dos registos literários, confrontando, assim as imagens supostamente realistas veiculadas na imprensa com o registo ficcional da literatura, tendo presente o estatuto de lenda e mito alcançado pela quadrilha em estudo.

Through a case study about a criminal association in the region of Guimarães in the late 19th century, a gang of thieves is reconstructed and characterized from the point of view of its genesis, composition, activity and areas of action. The first objective was to contextualize and describe the social relations between the gang, the forces of order and the population. The second objective was to analyze the social representations that the gang imprinted on the population, based on the testimonies of the witnesses of the lawsuits, news from the regional and national press and literary records, thus confronting the supposedly realistic images conveyed in the press with the fictional record of literature, bearing in mind the status of legend and myth achieved by the group under study.
