This dissertation is based on the theme of emotional work in nursing. Over time, the subject of Emotional Work has been the target of much research, but the academics have not yet been able to agree on the considerations they make about the theme. The main objective of the empirical was to analyze the main dynamics and factors present in emotional work in nursing professionals, as well as the consequences and ways of dealing with emotions within the nursing profession. In this sense, a qualitative study was developed, where 21 semi-structured interviews were carried out with nurses exercising their profession. Through the analysis of the interview data, it was possible to extract information about the negative and positive aspects of the nurse's work, the meanings attributed to emotional work, the forms of emotional work, the social expectations associated with the nursing professional, the types of emotions experienced by the nurse and associated with nursing practices, the individual strategies for dealing with emotions, the consequences of emotional work and the organizational policies and practices suggested by the nurses for the effective management of emotions at work. The results of this study allow us to state that nursing professionals need to suppress and control negative emotions. The interviewees narratives also reveal that they were not properly prepared to manage the emotions associated with work and that feelings of exhaustion, disappointment and tiredness may emerge. Several strategies have also been identified to deal with emotions at work, such as talking to colleagues, family or friends, going to the gym, among other options. In addition, other organizational strategies were suggested by the nurses, such as having psychological support by the organization or other forms of emotional support, as basis for dealing with difficult emotional situations in their professional lives. In sum, it is essential to deal with emotions as a nurse and to manage all the emotional burden attached to the workplace and the nursing profession. |
