O impacto da dinâmica económica na dimensão das reservas internacionais

Abstract

O presente estudo pretende analisar a estrutura das reservas internacionais a nível mundial. Para isso selecionamos um conjunto de variáveis independentes, nomeadamente a taxa de inflação, a taxa de juro, a taxa de crescimento do produto interno bruto, a taxa de câmbio, as exportações e as importações. Após reunir estes dados analisamos o seu efeito na Dimensão das Reservas Internacionais. Para este estudo utilizados como amostra a Zona Euro e seis países, nomeadamente, o Brasil, a China, os Estados Unidos, o Japão, o Reino Unido e a Suíça. A nossa análise é realizada no período de 1999 a 2017, no qual as reservas internacionais apresentam resultados históricos sem precedentes. Como instrumentos de análise utilizamos o Coeficiente de Correlação de Pearson, Modelo de Regressão Linear Múltipla, o Nível de Significância, o Coeficiente de Determinação e o Teste de Significância Global. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que a taxa de juro afeta negativamente a dimensão das reservas internacionais em todos os países da amostra, particularmente no Japão. Contudo, as exportações também afetam negativamente a necessidade de reservas, como seria de esperar, mas este resultado apenas se verifica na China, Zona Euro e Reino Unido. As importações afetam positivamente a necessidade de reservas em todas as economias à exceção dos Estados Unidos, pois tem possibilidade de importar através da sua própria moeda. A taxa de câmbio apresenta um resultado positivo, isto é, variações positivas de taxas de câmbio pressionam o aumento das reservas para todas as economias, sendo a exceção a China.

The present study intends to analyze the foreign exchange reserves structure in a global scale. For this purpose, we selected a set of independent variables, namely the inflation rate, the interest rate, the growth rate of gross domestic product, the exchange rate, the exports and the imports. After we collected the data about the set of independent variables, we analyzed it’s effect on dimension of foreign-exchange reserves. The sample chosen for this study were the Euro Zone and six countries, namely the Brazil, the China, the United States, the Japan, the United Kingdom and the Switzerland. Our test was made between 1999 and 2017, mainly because of the results we found about foreign-exchange reserves without nothing similar before. As analytical tools we used Pearson Correlation Coefficient, the Multiple Linear Regression Model, the Significance Level, the Coefficient of Determination and the Global Significance Test. The results seem to show that the interest rate tend to negatively affect the size of the foreign exchange reserves of all the countries in our sample, particularly Japan. However, the exports also negatively affect the foreign exchange reserves, as expected, but this result just verify in China, Euro Zone and United Kingdom. The imports positively affect the size of the foreign exchange reserves in all the countries in our sample with one exception the United States, as they have the possibility to import using their own currency. The exchange rate has a positive result, in other words, positive changes in exchange rates cause an increase of the size of foreign-exchange reserves for all economies in our sample, with the exception being China.
