Education is a citizens’ right as well as the key condition for a democratic and fair society, with a productive, humanized and sustainable economy. Nowadays societies need citizens to have access to science and technology knowledge so that they can exert an active and informed citizenship. This requires an appropriate understanding of the image of scientists as well as of their ways or working so that citizens can collaborate in political decisions, that affect scientific research and scientists’ work conditions, in as informed way. However, research has shown that citizens with a broad range of ages and levels of education (including teachers and students) hold stereotyped images about scientists and the way they work which are inconsistent with nowadays scientific practice. As far as it is known, in Angola there are no research studies dealing with this issue. Thus, this research aims at answering to the following question: what is the relationship between the images of scientists hold by high secondary school science teachers and students in Angola? To answer the research question, a study with 23 science teachers and 80 high secondary school students was carried out. Participants belong to six municipalities of Uige, in Angola. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from others available in the literature. Afterwards, a subsample of three teachers and four students was drawn on a volunteer basis from the subjects that answered to the questionnaire. They were interviewed on a few drawings about scientists that were produced by the respondents to the questionnaire. Results show that Angolan science teachers and students hold similar stereotyped images of scientists and the way they work which are similar to those reported in the literature. They seem to believe that scientists are male people with a strange look, that work alone in a laboratory by following the scientific method steps. However, they believe that when engaged in the scientific enterprise scientists are influenced by politics and by their family which is a good but uncommon result. Anyway, these results mean that if Angolan schools are to change students’ images of scientists and to convey them an appropriate image of the way scientists live and work, science teachers need to engage in in-service training that enables them to overcome their own stereotyped images of scientists and to develop appropriate strategies to deal with this issue. |
