Realização de estágios no percurso académico: o caso da Universidade do Minho

Abstract

Os estágios desempenham um papel indispensável na preparação dos alunos para as suas possíveis profissões e têm sido apontados como um complemento essencial na formação superior dos estudantes (Hurst & Good, 2010). A presente dissertação procura caraterizar os estágios a decorrer ou já realizados pelos estudantes da Universidade do Minho e as suas perceções sobre os mesmos. Mais especificamente, são aferidos os benefícios esperados, identificadas as desvantagens, bem como os motivos que influenciam os estudantes a optar pela realização de estágios extracurriculares. É ainda avaliado o grau de acompanhamento dos estudantes por parte dos supervisores das entidades acolhedores de estágio, é conferido se os estudantes realizam estágios extracurriculares fora da área de formação e são, também, apontados quais os fatores mais importantes para os estudantes serem escolhidos pelas entidades a fim de realizarem estágios. O instrumento de pesquisa para a recolha de dados consistiu na conceção e distribuição de um inquérito por questionário dirigido aos estudantes. O número de participantes nesta investigação, que tem caráter exploratório-descritivo, foi de 161. Os resultados da análise permitem verificar que a perceção da realidade em contexto de trabalho é o benefício mais esperado pelos estudantes com a realização de estágios. Já a desvantagem mais identificada recai sobre os custos associados. Além disso, é destacada pelos estudantes a falta de supervisão por parte das entidades acolhedoras de estágio. A perceção dos estudantes sobre o fator mais importante para serem selecionados pelas entidades a fim de realizarem estágio é a respetiva área de curso. Foram apontados, como principais motivos que influenciam os estudantes a realizar estágios extracurriculares, o aperfeiçoamento da técnica profissional e a otimização do currículo. Com este estudo, visa-se acrescentar à literatura existente a caraterização dos estágios e das perceções que os estudantes têm a partir da realização dos mesmos no contexto da Universidade do Minho e possibilitar a comparação dos resultados obtidos com outros estudos. Assim, o estudo é relevante tanto para os estudantes, como para as instituições de ensino e entidades acolhedoras de estágio, ao caraterizar os estágios e analisar as perceções e o papel dos estágios. Finalmente, espera-se que tanto os estudantes, como as instituições de ensino e as entidades que desenvolvem estágios analisem aquele que é o papel dos estágios e consigam colocar em prática formas de colmatar ou melhorar as dificuldades encontradas pelos estudantes com a realização dos estágios.

Internships play an indispensable role in preparing students for their possible professions and have been identified as an essential complement to students' higher education (Hurst & Good, 2010). This thesis aims to study the description of the internships taking place or already done by students from the University of Minho, as well as their perceptions. More specifically, it assesses the expected benefits, identifies the drawbacks and the reasons that make the students choose the extracurricular internships. It also evaluates the monitoring degree of students by the supervisors of the host institutions, as well as if the students make extracurricular internships out of their training area. Following this, it indicates the most important points that lead the entities to choose one or another student to do an internship. The research instrument used for data collection consisted in the conception and distribution of a questionnaire directed to students. The number of participants in this research, that has an exploratory-descriptive character, was 161. The results show that the most expected benefit for students doing internships is the perception of what it really means to work in a real work environment. On the other hand, the most identified disadvantage are the costs arising from these internships. Furthermore, students highlight the lack of supervision by the host institutions. Students believe that the most important point for the entities in order to choose them for an internship is the area of their studies. The main reasons that influence students to undertake extracurricular internships were the improvement of professional skills and an optimization of the curriculum. With this study, we intend to add to the existing literature the description of the internships and the perceptions that students have from doing them in the context of the University of Minho and make possible the comparison of the results obtained with other studies. Thus, the study is relevant for students, teaching institutions and entities who offer the internships by descripting the internships and analysing the perceptions and role of the internships. Finally, it is expected that the students as well as the educational institutions and the entities that develop internships, analyse the role of the internships and try to put in practice ways to overcome or improve obstacles found by the students with the internships.
