Urbanismo e arquitetura do quadrante sudeste da cidade romana de Bracara Augusta entre a época fundacional e a Antiguidade Tardia

Abstract

Este relatório resulta de um estágio realizado no âmbito do Mestrado em Arqueologia da Universidade do Minho, que decorreu na Unidade de Arqueologia da mesma universidade, inserido no contexto do ‘Projeto de Salvamento de Bracara Augusta’, da responsabilidade daquela instituição, o qual teve por objetivo central analisar e interpretar a informação arqueológica resultante de um conjunto de intervenções que tiveram lugar na área da cidade de Braga, que corresponde ao quadrante sudeste da antiga cidade romana. Tratando-se de intervenções dispersas que cobrem áreas reduzidas e que apenas potenciam resultados truncados e fragmentários, o objetivo do estágio centrou-se na análise e interpretação da informação arqueológica propiciada pelas referidas intervenções, tendo em vista apresentar uma primeira proposta de leitura relativa à evolução da ocupação deste setor da cidade romana. A avaliação dessa evolução implicou o cruzamento da informação estratigráfica de cinco intervenções arqueológicas realizadas ao longo da década de 90 do século XX, que nunca haviam sido objeto de tratamento detalhado e conjunto. Na verdade, dessas intervenções conheciam-se apenas alguns relatórios dos trabalhos realizados, não tendo os seus resultados conhecido uma merecida divulgação. Foi igualmente analisada a organização urbana deste setor da cidade romana, que confirma que o mesmo foi abrangido pelas operações cadastrais que formalizaram a malha fundacional de Bracara Augusta, reconhecida noutros locais melhor estudados. A análise do urbanismo pressupôs também uma avaliação das expressões arquitetónicas registadas nas escavações deste setor da cidade, tendo sido avaliadas as suas características de forma a contribuirmos para um melhor conhecimento da arquitetura e construção de Bracara Augusta entre o Alto Império e a Antiguidade Tardia. No final procurámos comparar os resultados obtidos, especialmente relativos à cronologia de ocupação do setor estudado, com aqueles que estão disponíveis para outras áreas da cidade romana, mais investigados e, por isso, melhor conhecidos e divulgados, como acontece com a metade norte e sobretudo noroeste de Bracara Augusta.

This report results from an internship in the course of the Archaeology Master's Degree Program at the Universidade do Minho, within the archaeology department of the same university. It took place in the context of the institution’s Projeto de Salvamento de Bracara Augusta ('Rescue project of Bracara Augusta'), which had as main objectives the analyses and interpretation of archaeological information resulting from a set of interventions that have taken place in the area of the city of Braga, corresponding to the Southeast quadrant of the ancient Roman city. Dealing with dispersed interventions, which cover reduced areas and only potentiate truncated and fragmentary results, the training course focused on the analysis and interpretation of archaeological information provided by these interventions, in order to present a first proposal for a reading on the evolution of the occupation of this sector of the Roman city. The evaluation of this evolution implied the crossing of the stratigraphic information of five archaeological interventions performed throughout the 90s of the 20th century, which had never been the subject of comprehensive and joint treatment. In fact, only a few reports of the work carried out during this interventions were known and their results never received the merited dissemination. The urban organization of this sector of the Roman city was also analysed, confirming that it was covered by the cadastral operations that formalized Bracara Augusta founding layout, as recognized at other, better investigated, locations. The urbanism’ analysis also required an evaluation of architectural expressions recorded during excavations of this sector of the city, evaluating its characteristics in order to contribute to a better understanding of architecture and construction of Bracara Augusta between the high of the Empire and the late antiquity. At the end we tried to compare the results obtained, especially concerning the chronology of occupation in the sector studied, with those that are available for other areas of the Roman city, which have been further investigated and are therefore better known and disseminated, as the northern and especially the north-western half of Bracara Augusta.
