respetivo crescimento. O Turismo Religioso diz respeito a um segmento cuja principal
motivação é a fé e a religião.
cidade.
a valorização do património e a afirmação do destino turístico. Undoubtedly, tourism is an industry of extreme importance for the national economy and its growth. Religious Tourism concerns to a segment whose main motivation is faith and religion. Despite the shortage of statistical data and inherent seasonality, this activity is booming and has a significant return. The research that was carried out focused on the deepening of knowledge about the religious segment of tourism in Braga, focusing specifically on the Holy Week. Its purpose was to understand to attain a better knowledge on the issue, identifying the region's critical success factors, the motivations and the profile of the tourists, as well as the economic impacts on the city. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted to Religious Tourism stakeholders and 91 questionnaires were applied to visitors during Holy Week, of which 56 were tourists, that is, those who overnight at least once in the city, and 35 were non-overnight travelers. Cluster analysis was used to identify the visitor profile groups, and in this way three clusters were found: Practicing Catholics, Non-Practicing Catholics and Atheists. They differ in their level of religiousness, for being very religious, relatively religious and not religious, respectively. The results are consistent with the literature review, with the accommodation, food and retail sectors being the main beneficiaries. It does not matter if the visitor is very committed to religion or not, since he/she enjoys goods and services. On average, the religious tourist spends about 172.20 € during his/her stay, which is a high value that is explained by the fact that there are a large number of tourists surveyed. It should be noted that 8% of the sample does not have any expenses in Braga, and the highest amount found was 800€. Through this research, it was possible to understand the potential and importance of Religious Tourism and its strong economic impact on regional development, that is, its contribution to wealth and employment in the city and region, as well as its contribution for the valorization of heritage and the promotion of the tourist destination. |
