The importance of a high degree of therapeutic adherence in people living with HIV / AIDS is well documented in the literature, requiring more than 90% adherence for the disease to be controlled. Thus, it is important to identify and understand variables that may positively or negatively affect adherence to care in this population, and this is the objective of the present study. A total of 100 participants were followed up at the Infectiology clinic of two hospitals in the North of Portugal, most of them were males (81%), aged between 21 and 81 years (M = 49.88, SD = 12.03). The results showed that sex and literacy significantly influence therapeutic adherence, with people of high educational level and women becoming more adept at therapy. The Total Positive Symptoms also showed to be a predictor of therapeutic adherence as well as stigmatization. These data reinforce the importance of health, social and sociodemographic variables in therapeutic adherence, drawing attention to the need of health professionals to be alert to psychopathology in the HIV / AIDS population and the importance of social education, since these variables affect direct adherence to health care in this population. |
