O tratamento da variação em tradução audiovisual. Um case study: Todo sobre mi madre de Almodóvar

Abstract

O objectivo principal deste trabalho é o estudo da variação linguística em tradução audiovisual (TAV). Para tal, inicialmente distinguimos entre a variação aplicada ao uso ou aos dialectos, e a aplicada ao usuário ou registos. Ao longo do trabalho, tanto na fase da exposição teórica como na aplicação prática, foi-se tornando evidente a necessidade de estudá-las como um todo, uma vez que o registo não é alheio às características dialectais de cada indivíduo. O estudo da variação linguística assume um maior significado quando aplicado a textos com várias vozes, como o texto fílmico, em que podem ser analisados segmentos situacionais definidos pelo contexto em que as personagens se situam em cada momento. Assim, abordamos a problemática da variação linguística em TAV com o intuito de nos aproximarmos de alguns problemas de tradução que, não sendo exclusivos da TAV, nem da tradução para legendagem, se revestem nesta modalidade de especial interesse, devido às particularidades de tradução, nomeadamente as mudanças próprias da passagem do modo oral ao escrito, as restrições derivadas da exigência de sincronia espacial e temporal, e a necessidade de condensação da linguagem derivada das mesmas limitações. Apesar das raízes linguísticas e culturais comuns à língua portuguesa e à espanhola, existem nítidas divergências entre as mesmas, sobretudo diferenças de cariz pragmático no uso linguístico. O nosso estudo centra-se na análise das convenções relativas ao uso da língua em contextos concretos e no modo como estas são transpostas de uma língua para outra. Não existe uma solução única para os problemas derivados da tradução da variação, irá depender, em cada caso, de diversos factores, optando-se por uma concepção funcional e dinâmica adequada a cada caso concreto.

The main objective of this thesis is the study of linguistic variation in audiovisual translation (TAV). Firstly, I intend to distinguish between variation as applied to use or to dialect, and that applied to usage or register. With the development of the thesis, in the theoretical presentation as much as in its practical application, it became evident that there was a need to study these as a whole, given that register is not separable from the dialectic characteristics of each individual. The study of linguistic variation assumes a greater significance when it is applied to texts with various voices, such as the filmic text; in such texts it is possible to analyse situational segments which are defined by the particular context in which the characters are situated at each moment. Thus, it was my intention to address the questions of linguistic variation in TAV with the objective of approaching some problems of translation that, not being exclusive to TAV, nor to translation of subtitles, are of special interest in this form, given the particularities of translation: namely, the actual changes from the spoken to the written form, the inherent restrictions in maintaining spatial and temporal synchronicity, and the need to condense the language due to those limitations. Despite the common linguistic roots of the Portuguese and Spanish languages, there are some distinct differences between the two languages, especially regarding pragmatics in linguistic use. This thesis focuses on the analysis of conventions relative to the use of language in concrete contexts and on the way they are transposed from one language to another. There is no one solution for the problems deriving from the translation of variation: in each case the solution will depend on diverse factors, leading to a functional and dynamic conception adapted to each real example.
