A fronteira enquanto espaço de partilha identitária, cultural e linguística: um estudo interpretativo da zona raiana de Melgaço

Abstract

A presente dissertação tem como propósito central empreender um estudo interpretativo da zona raiana de Melgaço, aos vários níveis que a compõem, nomeadamente social, cultural e linguístico. Assim, para uma melhor compreensão da identidade cultural da comunidade em estudo, tornou-se relevante atentar na especificidade da sua posição geográfica, particularmente, na influência que teve e tem a sua condição fronteiriça nos modos de ser, estar, viver e de falar dos seus habitantes. Neste sentido, a fronteira tornou-se um conceito teórico de importância capital, em torno do qual foram debatidos outros de equivalente relevância para a investigação, como os de memória, identidade, cultura, tradição e linguagem, privilegiando-se uma análise diacrónica dos mesmos. Aliando as perspetivas teóricas com o material empírico recolhido, no presente trabalho de investigação pretende-se: compreender de que forma a fronteira se constituiu como um espaço de oportunidades para a comunidade de Melgaço, analisando, para tal, o impacto social, cultural e demográfico dos fenómenos da emigração e do contrabando; aferir a importância da figura feminina e a evolução da sua posição social ao longo dos tempos e, também, averiguar a importância da fronteira enquanto espaço de partilha linguística, analisando as especificidades linguísticas e os traços caracterizadores ao nível fonético, fonológico, morfológico e lexical dos falares setentrionais, onde se insere a linguagem de Melgaço, tendo em conta, também, os elementos de afinidade com as línguas galega e castelhana. Para o cumprimento dos propósitos supracitados priorizou-se, no presente estudo, uma metodologia de tipo qualitativo, valorizando-se os percursos de vida e os testemunhos dos informantes envolvidos. A fronteira que separa a comunidade de Melgaço das comunidades raianas da vizinha Galiza sempre se constituiu como um espaço de permanente movimento e de troca, não só material e linguística, mas também simbólica e, apesar de ter perdido um lugar central nas vivências quotidianas dos melgacenses, constata-se que ainda hoje tem um lugar fundamental no seu imaginário.

The present dissertation has a main purpose to undertake an interpretative study of the border community in Melgaço, on its several levels namely social, cultural and linguistic. Thereby, for better understanding the cultural identity of this community, it became crucial to focus on its geographic particularities, mainly the influence that its condition had and still has on the ways of being, living and talking of the population. In this sense, the border became a concept with capital importance around which equally-relevant concepts were discussed like the concepts of memory, identity, culture, tradition and language, favoring a diachronic analysis of the same. By allying the theoretical perspectives with the empirical material this research has intended to: understand how the border built itself as a space of opportunities to Melgaço’s community, by analysing the social, cultural and demographic impact of the emigration and smuggling phenomena; assess the importance of the feminine figure and its social position evolution throughout the XXth century, as well as, to consider the importance of the border as a space of linguistic sharing, by analysing the phonetic, phonological, morphological and lexical specificities of the northern language, where Melgaço’s language insert on, also taking into account, the affinity with Galician and Castilian languages. For compliance of the purposes mentioned above, a qualitative methodology was elicited using in depth interviews and life trajectories of the informants. The border separating Melgaço’s community from the neighbour Galicia’s communities has always been a space of permanent movement and exchange, not only material and linguistic but also symbolic and, despite the fact of having lost a central place on the way of living of this community, it is a fact that even today it preserves a significant role in its imaginary.
