O Castro Máximo: contributo para o estudo do povoamento proto-histórico da região de Braga

Abstract

O objetivo deste trabalho prende-se com o estudo do povoamento proto-histórico da região de Braga, particularmente, o Castro Máximo, tendo por base os dados fornecidos pela escavação de 2001, no âmbito da minimização dos impactos para a construção do moderno estádio de Braga. As escavações foram dirigidas pelo Gabinete de Arqueologia da Câmara Municipal de Braga, tendo contado com a colaboração da Unidade de Arqueologia da Universidade do Minho. O povoado localiza-se na freguesia de S. Vicente, concelho e distrito de Braga. A investigação desenvolvida pretendeu dar resposta às questões relativas à cronologia e características de ocupação do povoado, pretendendo-se contribuir tanto para o seu conhecimento, como para uma avaliação do povoamento proto-histórico da região de Braga, tendo em conta a sua importância na rede de organização do povoamento do curso médio do Cávado. Procuraremos também compreender qual a relação do Castro Máximo com a fundação da cidade romana de Bracara Augusta, o que nos levará a abordar a questão do abandono deste povoado, até agora colocado entre o século I a.C. e as primeiras décadas do século I d.C. De modo a dar resposta às questões que colocámos, adotámos uma metodologia que incorporou a recolha e análise de bibliografia sobre o tema, a compilação da informação resultante da escavação, a análise e interpretação dos dados e o tratamento informático dos mesmos.

The purpose of this work is to study the proto-historic settlements of the region of Braga, particularly the Castro Máximo, based on the data provided by the 2001 excavation, in the scope of minimizing impacts for the construction of the modern stadium of Braga. The excavations were directed by the Archaeological Office of the Braga City Hall, and counted on the collaboration of the Archeology Unit of the University of Minho. The settlement is located in the parish of S. Vicente, county and district of Braga. The research carried out was intended to answer the questions related to the chronology and occupation characteristics of the village, aiming to contribute both to its knowledge and to an evaluation of the proto-historic settlement of the region of Braga, taking into account its importance in the network of organization of the settlement of the average course of Cávado. We will also try to understand the relationship between Castro Máximo and the foundation of the Roman city of Bracara Augusta, which will lead us to address the abandonment of this settlement, which probably took place between the first century BC and the first decades of the first century AD. In order to answer the questions we posed, we adopted a methodology that incorporated the collection and analysis of bibliography on the subject, the compilation of the information resulting from the excavation, the analysis and interpretation of the data and the computer treatment of the same.
