Small medium enterprises (SMEs) are business units of increasing importance to business in several economies, not being an exception for the portuguese economy. The main goal of this paper is to verify the explanatory factors of indebtedness in the SMEs of the portuguese manufacturing industry, for the period 2012-2015, as well as to analyze if some of the theories of capital structure adapt to the reality of these companies and to investigate if the specificity of each sector of activity conditions the capital structure. The empirical study focuses on 31.067 portuguese SMEs of manufacturing industry and it followed the methodology used in Gama (2000) to obtain evidence on the explanatory determinants of indebtedness in this type of enterprises. The empirical results related to the importance of the size of the company, the collateral value of the asset and the profitability reinforce the results previously published in the literature on the indebtedness of SMEs, which point to an increase in indebtedness for larger enterprises with a higher collateral value of the asset and for a lower indebtedness of the most profitable enterprises. On the other hand, the results obtained in the present study do not follow the literature, indicating that the indebtedness of the SMEs will increase when the others non-debt tax shields or when the business risk increases. These companies seem to be close to the behavior suggested by the Pecking Order Theory, they will prefer internal funds opposed to indebtedness, a result supported by the estimated value for the coefficient of the variable profitability. The Agency Theory also seems to be present in the results obtained in this study, for the variables size and proportion of assets, larger companies and with higher asset value are can more easily access to indebtedness and there is the possibility of conflicts of interest between owners and creditors. Lastly, the companies choose the level of indebtedness taking into account the benefits and the costs associated with it, this way they follow the Trade-Off Theory. |
