Compreensão e descrição das características das experiências marcantes em Bombeiros Voluntários Portugueses

Abstract

Os bombeiros estão frequentemente expostos a situações adversas que podem colocar as suas vidas em risco. A literatura tem identificado quais destas experiências tendem a tornar-se marcantes, no entanto é escassa acerca de porque é que perante o mesmo evento ele se torna marcante para um bombeiro e para outro não. Este estudo teve como objetivo compreender e descrever as características que fazem com que uma experiência se torne marcante para os bombeiros, bem como os mecanismos de resposta às mesmas. Realizaram-se dez entrevistas semiestruturadas a bombeiros do Norte do país, analisadas segundo os pressupostos da Análise Temática. Emergiram dois temas principais: 1) características das experiências, em que se salientaram dimensões como a imprevisibilidade e irreversibilidade das situações, a idade das vítimas e o seu grau de sofrimento; 2) caraterísticas e respostas do sujeito, que dizia respeito a aspetos como a inexperiência profissional e a ausência de formação não técnica, que surgiram associados a respostas imediatas de bloqueio. A ocorrência de experiências de identificação surgiu como resposta capaz de perturbar este grupo, sendo por isso marcante. Torna-se perentório desenvolvimento de competências, aquando da formação dos bombeiros, que envolvam a gestão das características identificadas, diminuindo, assim, o seu impacto.

Firefighters are frequently expose to adverse experiences that can put their lives at risk. Literature has identified which of these experiences are more often described as significant for this group. However, little is known about the characteristics that make them significant for a firefighter and not for another. The purpose of this study was to understand and describe the characteristics that make an experience significant for firefighters, as well as their associated response mechanisms. We conducted ten semi-structured interviews with firefighters from the North of the country, which were analyzed according to Thematic Analysis’ procedures. Two main themes emerged: 1) characteristics of the experiences, in which dimensions such as the unpredictability and irreversibility of the situations, the victims’ age and their degree of suffering were highlighted; 2) individual’s characteristics and responses, specifically aspects such as professional inexperience and lack of non-technical training, which were associated with immediate responses of frozing. Identification emerged as a response capable of disturbing firefighters, being therefore considered significant. During firefighters training, it is important to promote and enhance their skills in when managing the described characteristics in order to reduce their negative impact.
