Autoestima, satisfação e funcionamento sexual: estudo com estudantes heterossexuais do ensino superior

Abstract

A autoestima, a satisfação e o funcionamento sexual influenciam o bem-estar físico e psicológico do indivíduo, sendo por isso consideradas variáveis determinantes da sexualidade humana. O principal objetivo do estudo foi avaliar e comparar a autoestima global e sexual, a satisfação sexual e relacional, e o funcionamento sexual em estudantes universitários heterossexuais. A amostra do estudo foi constituída por 360 estudantes heterossexuais (110 homens e 250 mulheres) do ensino superior, com uma média de idades de 22 anos. Os participantes preencheram um questionário online, que incluía seis instrumentos de autorrelato que avaliavam as variáveis em estudo. Os resultados demonstraram que todas as variáveis se correlacionam entre si, existindo diferenças de género significativas ao nível da autoestima global, autoestima sexual e satisfação relacional. Neste sentido, os homens apresentaram níveis superiores de autoestima global e sexual, e níveis inferiores de satisfação relacional. Em ambas as subamostras foi ainda possível verificar que a autoestima sexual prediz de forma positiva o funcionamento sexual, e que o funcionamento sexual e a satisfação relacional predizem significativamente a satisfação sexual. Os resultados desta investigação evidenciam a relação que se estabelece entre a autoestima global e sexual, a satisfação sexual e relacional e o funcionamento sexual em estudantes universitários heterossexuais.

Self-esteem, satisfaction and sexual functioning have influence over the physical and psychological well-being of an individual, therefore they’re considered essential variables of human sexuality. This study aimed at evaluating and comparing global and sexual self-esteem, sexual and relationship satisfaction, and sexual functioning. The sample consisted in 360 heterosexual college students (110 males and 250 females), with an average age of 22 years old. To measure the variables described, the participants were asked to fulfill an online questionnaire which included six self-report scales. The results showed a significant correlation between all the variables and significant gender differences in global and sexual self-esteem, as well as in relationship satisfaction. Thus, men scored higher levels of global and sexual self-esteem, and lower levels of relationship satisfaction. In both sub-samples, we verified that the sexual self-esteem positively predicted the sexual functioning, and that the sexual functioning and the relationship satisfaction significantly predicted the sexual satisfaction. Main findings support the correlation between global and sexual self-esteem, sexual and relationship satisfaction, and sexual functioning among college students.
