The official documents regulating the teaching of Portuguese - Goals for Portuguese in Basic Education, 2012 and Portuguese Basic Education Programmes, 2009 - have shifted literary reading to a special field of focus – the area of Literary Education. Here, prominence is given to the undeniable value of literary texts both in fostering the students’ intellectual development and in shaping their identity and integrity. The interest in raising the topic for discussion is justified by having observed a clear resistance on the part of our students to an experience of reading that we believe is essential to their education. Therefore, the underlying purpose of this research is to understand the circumstances that explain the relationship that students of the 3rd cycle of basic education have with literary reading in an attempt to see what hinders/facilitates the making of literary readers in schools. Moreover, the democratic, reflective and transforming view taken by this study has these guiding objectives:(i) to examine the role of schools in shaping literary readers; (ii) to characterise the aspects of the teaching of reading valued by students; (iii) to characterise the critical socialisation contexts for literary reading experienced by students, notably the family, the school and the peer group; (iv) to identify certain areas of literary reading practices of students, with particular emphasis on objectives, purposes, frequency and favoured contexts. The main conclusions drawn are: a) students do not like reading in school, because they are not interested in literary texts; b) students recognise the contribution literary reading makes to their personal development; c) when they are studying a literary text, most students rely heavily on comments and notes that teachers make on the texts; d) reading activities are not widely engaged in by the respondents’ peers. |
