A assistência à alma na confraria da Santíssima Trindade da Igreja do Pópulo de Braga (1700-1750)

Abstract

No presente estudo é nosso objetivo estudar a assistência mortuária e espiritual na confraria da Santíssima Trindade, de Braga (1700-1750). Esta instituição, fundada na Idade Média, ficou situada na Sé bracarense até finais do século XIX, mudando-se nessa época, para a igreja do Pópulo, onde se juntou com outra irmandade, permanecendo lá até os dias atuais, sob o nome da Celestial Ordem Terceira da Santíssima Trindade. O nosso trabalho divide-se em três capítulos: o primeiro referente é a morte e ao movimento confraternal da Idade Moderna; o segundo respeitante ao funcionamento da confraria da Santíssima Trindade de Braga e o último sobre a assistência espiritual que esta confraria oferecia aos seus irmãos, mas não só. Através da análise das fontes existentes, procuramos demonstrar como funcionava a sua relação com os seus confrades, os direitos e deveres dos irmãos e o processo de composição da Mesa. Contextualizamos nossa irmandade no setor político e socioeconômico da época, apresentando as razões que levaram os indivíduos a se associarem a uma irmandade, e como se dava a relação entre a Igreja e os fiéis. Destacamos ainda os valores pagos pelas entradas dos irmãos e as regalias que estes usufruíam depois de associados, assim como, também observamos os primeiros passos do declínio das irmandades. Procuramos apresentar os serviços oferecidos pela confraria e a sua postura diante das almas dos seus irmãos, ao mesmo tempo que referimos algumas das suas principais festividades. Todavia, o nosso enfoque recaiu sobre a assistência espiritual prestada na hora da morte e após dela, sublinhando as missas celebradas, os sacerdotes e o atraso que registravam no período em estudo. As irmandades passaram por graves problemas socioeconômicos em finais da Idade Moderna. Essas dificuldades iam desde a inadimplência dos irmãos, passando pela falta de compromissos dos padres, chegando ao acúmulo de missas e finalizando com o advento das leis pombalinas e o rápido desenvolvimento da descrença em relação às divindades, por parte das pessoas que foram influenciadas pelos ideais Iluministas. Esta situação causou grande impacto na entrada de novos confrades, a partir da segunda metade do século XVIII, o que se verificou também na confraria em estudo.

In the present study our objective is studying the mortuary and spiritual assistance in the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity, Braga (1700-1750). This institution, founded in the Middle Ages, was located in the Braga Cathedral until the late of XIX century, moving at that time, to the Church of Pópulo, and there uniting with other fraternity that remaining to the present days, under the name Celestial Order Third of the Most Holy Trinity. Our work is divided into three chapters: the first refers to the death and confraternity movement at the Modern Age; the second concerning the acting of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity of Braga and the last chapter regarding the spiritual assistance that this confraternity offered to his brothers, but not only. By the analysis of existing sources, we search for demonstrate the relationship with his confreres, the rights and duties of the brothers and the Bureau compound process. We contextualize our brotherhood in the political and socio-economic sector of that time, presenting the reasons that led individuals to associate a brotherhood, and it was the relationship between the Church and the faithful. We also emphasized the amounts paid by the entries of the brothers and the benefits that they received after associated and also observed the first steps of the brotherhoods decline. We searched to present the services offered by the brotherhood and the attitude towards of his brothers' souls, referring some of main festivities. However, our focus was on the spiritual assistance at death and after it, emphasizing the Masses celebrated, the priests and the delay recorded during the period studied. The brotherhoods have gone through serious socio-economic problems in the late of Modern Age. These difficulties ranged from the default of the brothers, through lack of commitments of priests, even to the accumulation of Masses and ending with the advent of "pombalinas" laws and the accelerated development of disbelief regarding to the deities, to those people that have been influenced by the Illuminists ideals. This situation caused major impact at the entry of new confreres, from the second half of the XVIII century, which also was checked in the confraternity under study.
