alunos cegos e coloca desafios a aluno e professor.
Blind students’ inclusion in regular classes is a very complex issue but it is even more complex when Physical Sciences classes are at stake. This higher complexity is due to the fact that Physical Sciences require the use of lab activities and representations, such as graphics, diagrams, schemes, as well as symbols specific from Chemistry and Physics technical language. Using these types of resources is a challenge for blind students as well as for their science teachers because most of them are not familiar enough with those types of resources. This study aims at: characterizing teachers’ and blind students’ perceptions of the inclusion of blind students in the 3rd cycle Physical Sciences regular classes, focusing on: perceptions of both teachers of blind students and blind students on the inclusion of the latter in Physical Sciences regular classes; the use of visual representations, Physics and Chemistry Braille symbols, and lab activities in physical sciences classes. Students were also inquired about their perceptions on why blind students decide to follow or not to follow science studies at the secondary school level. To attain these objectives, 11 3rd cycle Physical Sciences teachers, that had taught this school subject to blind students, and eight blind students, that had completed that subject, were interviewed. Results indicate that: even though teachers do their best to attend their blind students’ difficulties, Physical sciences teachers have low expectations towards blind students’ engagements in this school subject activities, and blind student showed some evidence that they do not feel included in the classes; the available external visual tactile representations, either are not seen as appropriate by the teachers or teachers and students do not know how to use them; students seem to feel difficulty in using physical sciences Braille symbols and the teachers do not know them; blind students are unaware of lab materials adapted to their needs. Besides, the majority of the blind students that were interviewed did not show interest in following a science carrier. Hence, it is worthwhile to organise in-service courses focusing on this issue, so that teachers can develop Knowledge and competences that enable them to deal appropriately with the inclusion of blind students in Physical sciences classes. |
