Modernidade e tradição na cultura mirandesa: as danças de Pauliteiros de Miranda no contexto contemporâneo

Abstract

Esta tese pretende compreender os traços que definem a cultura mirandesa atualmente, no que diz respeito às suas formas de expressão, designadamente as danças de Pauliteiros, e que mudanças se operaram ao longo do tempo nestas manifestações culturais. Neste sentido, para desenvolver e explicitar a relação entre o conceito de tradição e o conceito de modernidade, ambos os conceitos serão definidos de acordo com a perspetiva de Giddens (2000) sobre a modernização reflexiva, com referências às influências mútuas que estes conceitos foram sofrendo. Delineamos como objetivos orientadores: compreender as alterações que se foram operando nas manifestações da cultura mirandesa, designadamente nas danças de Pauliteiros em algumas freguesias de Miranda do Douro e Mogadouro; dar a conhecer as motivações para a criação dos grupos de Pauliteiros e Pauliteiras; perceber os desafios enfrentados pelos grupos no que diz respeito à sua continuidade e preservação; e, finalmente, compreender de que forma estas alterações têm contribuindo para a divulgação e preservação das danças de Pauliteiros, num contexto contemporâneo. O presente estudo tem o enquadramento da investigação qualitativa valorizando os testemunhos de 16 participantes – pauliteiros e pauliteiras. A valorização dos percursos que estes atores descrevem contribui para a identificação de elementos de continuidade e descontinuidade e para explorar o seu papel na preservação das tradições transmontanas. Apesar de as realidades reportadas serem diversas e até opostas em alguns aspetos – denotando descontinuidades – pode-se concluir que estão reunidas condições para dar continuidade a esta tradição secular que caracteriza culturalmente o Planalto Mirandês. Uma vez que estas manifestações se afirmam como um símbolo da região, é do interesse das comunidades e do próprio poder local que seja dada continuidade às danças de Pauliteiros, apesar dos desafios que, visivelmente, estes grupos atravessam.

This thesis aims to understand the characteristics currently defining the culture of Miranda do Douro, concerning its forms of expression, namely the dances of “Pauliteiros” and the changes which have taken place over time in these cultural events. To develop and clarify the relationship between the concept of tradition and the concept of modernity, both concepts are defined according to the perspetive of Giddens (in 2000) on reflexive modernization, with references to influences mutually suffered by both concepts. As guidelines for this work’s goals, the following topics were defined: to understand the changes that have been operated in manifestations of Miranda do Douro’s culture, especially in the dances of “Pauliteiros” in some villages of Miranda do Douro and Mogadouro; to turn the reasons for the creation of groups of Pauliteiros and Pauliteiras publically known; to understand the challenges faced by groups while striving to assure their survival; and finally to understand how these changes have contributed to the dissemination and preservation of the dances of “Pauliteiros”, in a contemporary context. This study has the framework of qualitative research valuing the testimonies of sixteen participants both male (pauliteiros) and female (pauliteiras). The recognition of the pathways described by these actors contributes to the identification of continuity and discontinuity elements, and to explore their role in preserving the traditions from Trás-Os-Montes. Despite the different realities reported in some respects - denoting discontinuities - we can conclude that there are good conditions to maintain this ancient tradition that has always characterized the Mirandese Plateau. Since these expressions are asserted as a symbol of the region, it is in the interest of the communities and local authorities themselves that dances of “Pauliteiros” be perpetuated, despite the challenges that, clearly, these groups are nowadays going through.
