O crescimento periférico das cidades medievais portuguesas (séculos XIII-XVI) : a influência dos mesteres e das instituições religiosas

Abstract

Este trabalho visa contribuir para um melhor conhecimento acerca do crescimento periférico das cidades medievais portuguesas, através da análise do papel dos mesteres e das instituições religiosas. Com base em alguns núcleos urbanos portugueses, nomeadamente Braga, Guimarães, Porto e Lisboa procurámos caraterizar o processo de desenvolvimento urbano ocorrido no espaço extramuros entre os séculos XII e inícios do XVI. Pretende- -se, deste modo, analisar as principais transformações verificadas na evolução urbana de cada uma das referidas cidades, atendendo às especificidades e contextos cronológicos e espaciais, mas também às tendências gerais do reino. A concretização dos objetivos enunciados baseou-se numa análise comparativa realizada a partir de trabalhos monográficos já existentes, mas também de diversos tipos de fontes, em particular materiais, escritas, cartográficas e do edificado medieval sobrevivente.

This paper aims to contribute to a better knowledge of the suburbs growth of Portuguese medieval towns, by examining the role of crafts and religious institutions. Based on the study of some Portuguese urban centers, namely Braga, Guimarães, Oporto and Lisbon we characterized the process of urban development that took palce outside the city walls, between the twelfth and early sixteenth centuries. It is intended, therefore, to analyze the main transformations in urban evolution of each of those cities, according to the specific chronological and spatial contexts, but also to the global trends of the kingdom. This study was developed through a methodology of comparative analysis based upon existing monographic studies, but also on different types of sources, in particular material, written and cartographic ones, as well as the surviving medieval buildings.
