anádromo (truta marisca - Salmo trutta morpha truta L. 1758).
The species Salmo trutta presents a great flexibility in adapting to different habitats and may present a sedentary (brown trout- Salmo trutta morpha fario L. 1758) or anadromous (sea trout - Salmo trutta morpha trutta L. 1758) lifestyle. Due to its conservation status, especially the migratory form that is classified as critically endangered, this study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the current conservation status of this species as well as its ecology in the international section of the River Minho and its tributaries. The present study encompasses the analysis of abundance and biomass data over 7 consecutive years (2007-2013) in the international section of the River Minho. We registered an absence of catches of individuals of the two subspecies in the months with higher temperatures (July and August). Moreover, from September to January there was a higher catch of sea trout, which may be due to peaks in migration. Most of the individuals captured showed a weakened physical condition. In the spatial distribution analysis of the species S. trutta samplings were carried out in four streams (a single sample per site performed in the summer), which showed differences in their population parameters. The Ribeira da Veiga Mira and Ribeira de Campos were the sites that showed a higher density of individuals (24.8 and 32 ind./100m2, respectively). On the other hand the Ribeira das Ínsuas showed the lowest density (10 ind./100m2). The Ribeira das Ínsuas also stands out for being the only site with significant differences in the proportion of males and females. The River Mouro had individuals with a better physical condition as well as a predominance of individuals of the age class 0+. Through the analysis of the stomach contents it was found that the diet of this species differs significantly in the four streams. The diet of the individuals caught in the River Mouro was the most distinct of the four. We also observed significant differences amongst the various age groups; however, prey of the Diptera and Trichoptera orders were the most common. Because sampling was conducted in the summer there was a high consumption of terrestrial prey, mainly belonging to the Diptera order, especially by older and larger individuals. On the International section of the River Minho and its main tributaries of the Portuguese border a total of 49 potential spawning sites were identified. Given its characteristics and good preservation, the River Mouro presents particularly interesting conditions for the spawning of this species. Given the ecological and socio-economic importance that this species represents in the River Minho a constant monitoring is important on order to document possible changes in abundance, biomass and population structure. Due to the threats that this species has been subjected (particulary the anadromous form) it becomes necessary to take steps towards the preservation and conservation of this species. |
