Livemocha : uma rede social de aprendizagem de línguas

Abstract

Este estudo centra-se na análise da rede social de aprendizagem de línguas Livemocha, procurando conhecer a realidade portuguesa no que diz respeito à sua utilização. Na componente conceptual, a revisão de literatura centra-se em duas vertentes. A primeira relacionada com as questões do social networking, bem como as comunidades virtuais de aprendizagem, analisando os tipos de comunidades virtuais descritos por Henri e Pudelko (2003) e os modelos de aprendizagem em ambientes virtuais referidos por Meirinhos e Osório (2007). Ainda no âmbito das redes sociais, analisa-se a teoria da aprendizagem social de Wenger (1998), os conceitos de construtivismo comunal e conetivismo. A segunda vertente centra-se na aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras. Neste contexto, foca as teorias de second language acquisiton, o conceito CALL (computer assisted language learning), a teoria electrate language learning, o modelo Tandem de aprendizagem de línguas e o feedback. Conclui-se esta análise com a descrição da rede Livemocha, com uma breve incursão na sua nova versão. A metodologia utilizada insere-se na tipologia da etnografia virtual ou digital e contemplou a criação de uma base de dados com os dados recolhidos na rede, a realização de um questionário, entrevistas e estudo da atividade dos utilizadores. Os resultados mostram uma atitude positiva perante esta ferramenta e a comunidade de aprendizagem que se estabelece no seu seio. As funcionalidades que integra permitem interagir com nativos de diversas línguas, o que constitui o seu maior trunfo. Há algumas indicações neste estudo de progressão efetiva na aprendizagem, sobretudo a nível vocabular e menos notória na componente gramatical, que necessitam de comprovação em estudos posteriores.

This research focuses on the analysis of the language learning social network Livemocha and aims to know the Portuguese reality with respect to its use. In the conceptual component, the literature review focuses on two aspects. The first relates to the issues of social networking and virtual learning communities, analysing types of virtual communities described by Henri and Pudelko (2003) and the models of learning in virtual environments mentioned by Meirinhos and Osório (2007). Still within the topic of social networks, we analyse the social learning theory of Wenger (1998), the concepts of communal constructivism and connectivism. The second part focuses on learning foreign languages. In this context, it focuses on the theories of second language acquisition, the concept CALL (computer assisted language learning), the electrate language learning theory, the Tandem language learning model and feedback. We conclude this analysis with a description of the Livemocha network, with a brief glimpse at the new version. The methodology used is part of the typology of virtual or digital ethnography and contemplated the creation of a database with the data collected in the network, the realization of a questionnaire, interviews and study of the activity of users. The results show a positive attitude towards this tool and learning community that is established within it. Its features allow you to interact with native people from several languages, which is its greatest asset. There is some indication in this study of effective learning progression, especially in what concerns vocabulary, which is less noticeable in the grammatical component, thus requiring further investigation.
