Dificuldades e estratégias investigativas : o estudo da utilização da Internet pelos idosos

Abstract

Como estudar a relação dos idosos com a Internet? Que cuidados ter com este grupo? Estas são algumas questões que surgiram na elaboração da nossa Tese de Doutoramento (“A utilização da Internet pelos idosos: Usos e Gratificações”), em curso. Dado o aumento do envelhecimento demográfico e do uso da Internet, consideramos relevante perceber como pode a Internet contribuir para um envelhecimento bem-sucedido. No entanto, durante a investigação, deparamo-nos com alguns obstáculos: as especificidades deste grupo social e as dificuldades decorridas das opções teórico-metodológicas. Assim, mostraremos como desenvolver uma investigação neste contexto, analisando o grupo dos idosos; explicitando a perspetiva dos «usos e gratificações»; e propondo uma metodologia (mixed methods research). Como produto final, elaboramos um conjunto de cuidados a aplicar na investigação: por parte do investigador; na construção e aplicação do inquérito (online) e das entrevistas; e com o grupo-alvo: os idosos.

How to study the relationship between of the elderly with the Internet? What precautions have with this group? These are some issues that arose in the development of our PhD thesis (“The use of the Internet by the elderly: Uses and Gratifications”), ongoing. Because the aging population and use of the Internet increased, we consider important to understand how the Internet can contribute to successful aging. However, during the investigation, we faced some obstacles: the specifics of this social group and the difficulties of theoretical-methodological options. Thus, we show how to develop a research in this context, analyzing the group of the elderly; explaining the perspective of the ‘uses and gratifications’, and proposing a methodology (mixed methods research). As a final product, we developed a set of care to be applied in research: by the researcher; in the construction and implementation of the survey (online) and interviews; and with the target group: the elderly.
