As histórias permitiram desenvolver a
consequente resolução do problema. Problem solving has been recognized in the mathematics curriculum, as a relevant activity. In general, teachers are aware of the importance of this process in the teaching of mathematics, however, there are unsatisfactory results in national and international examinations (eg PISA 2003, 2009). This research emerges from the concerns of a future teacher, when observing in the classroom the absence of a systematic and explicit teaching in problem solving. Thus, she developed a pedagogical and investigative project aimed to understand students' difficulties in interpreting and solving problems, analyze the usefulness of children’s stories in creating and solving mathematical problems and find strategies that facilitate the resolution of problems. This study presents an investigative path covered during the Supervised Teaching Practice, carried out in a class of 3rd and 4th grade, during seven weeks. The methodological approach adopted in the educational intervention was action research and various instruments were used for gathering data. The project began with the presentation of initial assessment of students’ ability on problem solving and the exploitation of children's stories that formed the basis of the recontextualizing of problems. The stories allowed developing understanding of problems in order to raise students’ interest in the resolution and enable a more familiar language. Formulation and writing enunciations activities took place that allowed the evaluation of competences acquired by students in the previous phase. The realization of this project revealed numerous difficulties of children in solving problems, caused mainly by the difficulty in the interpretation of statements. With the contextualisation of the problems in children's stories, the phase of understanding the problem proved to be more accessible and, as such, allowed a better performance in the following phases and the subsequent resolution of the problem. |
