The A-levels are in themselves a means of external assessment, whose results can limit the students’ enrollment in the intended courses. They are the core examinations of many high level examination courses. The failing in the subjects of Physics and Chemistry, both in a general and particular (A-levels) way, is a real issue and very worrying to students, teachers, parents and the ministry of Education. It is an important social issue as well, since it limits the professional options of many students. All this underlies the need of this research. This qualitative and descriptive study analyses students’ ideas, who attend Physics and Chemistry, as well as the teachers’ readings on the failing of the subjects. Therefore, this research aims at understanding, on one hand, the (un)success of the Physics and Chemistry subjects and, on the other hand, its causes and the means to overcome it. Bearing in mind the goals of the study, an interview of a sample of 14 students, who attended the Physics and Chemistry A subjects (in 2009/2010) and who took the Alevel examinations (in 2010/2011),in a school in Guimarães, was carried out. The outcome of the interview follows as this: seven out of the fourteen students score below national average and the other seven students score much higher than the average (more than 16 points out of 20). Nine Physics and Chemistry teachers (having taught the subjects at least once in each grade – 10th/11th up to the date of the interview) were also interviewed in the same school. The upcoming data of this research suggest that both teachers and students share the believe that the main cause underlying the failing in the Physics and Chemistry subjects are due to the overloaded syllabus. As to the A-level failings, both teachers and students refer that it is not due to the difficulty of the A-levels per se but, again, to the overloaded syllabus that is assessed and to the stiff marking criteria of the A-levels. To overcome this problem both teachers and students suggest a less overloaded syllabus and a wider time span in terms of the taking of the A-level exams so as to allow a better preparation, end of year A-level examinations, a bigger commitment on behalf of the students and a more flexible marking criteria. The Physics and Chemistry A-levels have been implemented in Portugal since 2006, which are compulsory to graduate from high school. |
