mesmas e comprometem a fisiologia ocular.
Day Moist™ e Focus Dailies™ Aqua Comfort de hidrogel convencional e a Acuvue®
One Day Trueye™ de Silicone-Hidrogel.
Biofinity™).
This study gathers the results of a laboratory study conducted over 1 year. One of the objectives of this thesis was to measure the optical properties (such as transmittance, reflectance and refractive index) and physical properties (central and peripheral thickness) of new contact lenses with different materials and different powers (between the maximum and minimum power of each brand). The main objective of this thesis is to acquire a wider knowledge of the contact lenses properties and to understand in what way the variation of the contact lenses potency may alter other properties that afect the optical performance of the contact lenses and compromise the ocular fisiology. For this study were selected nine brands of contact lenses in which has been measured different kinds of characteristics with the aid of specific research tools. Four brands of daily lenses were studied: Soflens Daily™, Acuvue® One Day Moist™ and Focus Dailies™ (conventional hydrogel) and Acuvue® One Day Trueye™ (Silicone-Hydrogel). The remaining 5 lenses evaluated belong to the group of Silicone-Hydrogel. Of those five, just Acuvue® Oasys™ and Menicon PremiO™ were biweekly and the other three were monthly (Air Optix™ Aqua, Purevision ™2 and Biofinity™). The powers of contact lenses were, the minimum degree of each brand (between -9D and -12D),-3D,-6D, the maximum negative degree of each brand, +3D and +6 D. In total were evaluated 54 contact lenses. The results presented in this work indicate that the refractive index does not change with the power or thickness of the contact lenses, but with the types of polymers that form them and with the polymerization process applied. This property depends primarily on the optical density of the contact lenses material and its water content. With this study we have also shown that the gases transmissibility of any hydrophilic contact lenses depends on the central and peripheral thickness of the contact lenses and that may change it´s clinical behavior. Finally, we have shown that the transmittance values on the ultraviolet radiation zone change with the type of contact lenses analyzed. |
