In practice, this presented study sought to answer the question: "To what extent do the health articles of Público, Jornal de Notícias and Expresso newspapers reveal a precautionary role on the media part?" Bearing this purpose in mind, one gathered all newspapers articles about health of: Público, Jornal de Notícias and Expresso during 2011, resulting in a corpus of 1890 texts. Taking this into account, the data were incorporated into one where the variables allow the examination of aspects such as type of journalism, sources of information, the grounds of newsworthiness, among others. At a later stage, cases of preventive texts (in a total of 43 articles) were seen in detail. At the conceptual level, we focused on Health Communication, a discipline that studies strategies to influence decisions on the health’s promotion (Teixeira, 2004). In this context, we studied concepts like prevention - which implies a prior action to prevent disease progression (Leavell & Clark, 1976)-, promotion - which is a process that enables greater control of health (Oak & Oak, 2006)-, and health education - which is based on learning behaviors that are favorable to health. The question of the information sources was another issue on debate, since it constitutes a fundamental element for the understanding of journalistic discourse. In this analysis, there were some topics to retain. It does not appear to be a preventive spirit in the Portuguese press; however there is a certain concern about the presence and identification of information sources, as well as a strong presence of institutional sources of expertise, officers and also family members and patients. The sources tend to be masculine and nationwide. About the type of journalism, there is a considerable number of negative titles, however, the same is not true in all preventive texts. Not in this case, there is the preference for a more positive approach. In addition, there is a strong preference for news at the expense of coverage and interviews. These and other issues will be explored in the following pages, aiming to realize the role of communication and of the Portuguese press in the health field and, more specifically, to apprehend how this works in a preventive scope. |
