mediana.
This report focuses on the study of solving strategies used by 7th grade students in the tasks involving the statistical concepts of mean, median and mode. The study aimed at: (i) characterizing the solving strategies used by students in statistical tasks, (ii) recognizing the potential and limitations of resolution strategies used by students and finally, (iii) engaging students in group discussions in class in order to assess their strategies. This study was conducted in a class of 7 th grade, with 19 students, and appealed to the working group, open tasks and group discussions as a teaching-learning methodologies. The data used in this study were obtained from different methods: first, the students decided to form a diagnostic evaluation solely on statistical content, and then gathered up all the written production of students throughout the intervention, taping all classes and finally the students did an assessment test of the measures of central tendency. In terms of results, this study identified five types of solving strategies: a strategy of trial and error, compensation strategy, strategy of graphical representation, arithmetic strategy and finally algebraic strategy. The most used strategy throughout the intervention strategy was the arithmetic (70.8%), followed by compensation strategy (12.5%), graphical representation of the strategy (10.4%), the algebraic strategy (4 2%) and finally the strategy of trial and error (2.1%). From all the strategies, the arithmetic strategy and the algebraic strategy are the ones which seem more powerful because they are fast strategies and can be applied to other contents of Mathematics. On the other hand, from the identified strategies, it seems that the most limited strategy is the strategy of trial and error since it is a strategy hardly applicable and its degree of success is related to the insistence of the subject. In what concerns group discussions, it was found that by using this teaching and learning methodology, students could validate their own strategies and therefore establish contact with various others‘ since all students were encouraged to share their own strategies. |
