estudos empíricos realizados no contexto deste fenómeno.
As características
explicitamente investigada. A persistência do desempenho do NAV no curto prazo e a
futuro.
passado do NAV.
The existence and persistence of a divergence between the market price of the closed-end funds and its Net Asset Value (NAV) is a very intriguing phenomenon that has been catching the interest of several academics along the years. The discount has been the most common reported anomaly by the different empirical studies implemented in the context of this phenomenon. As an attempt to solve this puzzle, several theories emerged in the literature providing potential explanations for the discount/premium phenomenon. On one hand there are theories based on rational factors, including the theory based on management performance tested in this study, and on the other hand those based on behavioural factors. This work is based on a sample of 37 UK domestic closed-end funds, for the period from 31/10/1994 to 31/10/2009. The specific characteristics of the UK market, dominated by institutional investors and where the presence of individual investors is not significant, justify the use of a rational approach to treat the problem under study. In this study, the relationship between the discount and the performance of the funds is explicitly investigated. The NAV performance persistence in the short term and the relation between the past fund performance and the level of its discount are analysed. Additionally, the hypothesis of predictability of the future funds performance is also tested. Though NAV’s performance is persistent in the short term, there is a lack of a significant relation between the present discount and NAV´s past performance. The alternative adoption of Jensen´s alpha as a measure of performance produces divergent results as, this time, a positive and statistically significant relation is identified between the past performance of the fund and its current discount. The predictability hypothesis of the NAV performance is not rejected. A statistical relevant relation between the current discount and the future funds return is identified. |
