Sustainable development has been researched by all industrial sectors, in which the road industry is included. Its achievement by the road industry is associated with the need to reduce the use of natural resources in pavements and preserve existing assets. Thus, many studies have been promoted on the reuse of the reclaimed material from end-of-life pavements and the valorisation of industrial and urban waste to reduce the use of new materials in road pavements. It should be noted that there is a particular interest in the sector in developing alternatives to bitumen since it is obtained from oil. Therefore, this work aims to develop an asphalt binder alternative to conventional bitumen, which shows performance characteristics identical, or improved, compared to traditional bitumen. For this purpose, new asphalt binders will be developed using waste cooking oil (WCO), which decreases the viscosity of the bitumen, and ground tyre rubber, which modifies and increases the bitumen viscosity for different percentages of partial substitution of bitumen. In this work, seven bituminous binders were developed, changing the percentage of WCO and the amount of crumb rubber. Different methods were studied to produce the binder, changing the digestion times to explore the rubber devulcanisation process. The new binders were later submitted to characterisation tests, which allowed to choose those with higher potential for application in road pavements. Asphalt mixtures were produced with those binders, and the tests were performed to determine their performance. The results were very positive, as it was demonstrated that the use of WCO and crumb rubber as bitumen extenders or modifiers originates binders with mechanical properties similar to those of the conventional bitumens and even improved in some cases. The encouraging results obtained in binders with around 20% rubber and 15% WCO should be noted, which later gave rise to asphalt mixtures with reduced sensitivity to water. The rubber devulcanisation process promoted adequate storage stability of the binders. Binders with WCO and rubber make it possible to obtain new asphalt binders of different consistency for different application conditions. |
