A educação pela arte na Fundação de Serralves

Abstract

The purpose of this research study was to determine the present state of Artistic Education and, specifically, the state of Education through Art in Portugal, particularly emphasizing the study of its implementation at School and in the Education Service of Serralves Foundation. Emphasizing, further, the development of Portraits, a 2005-2006 project with Schools, suggested by that Education Service. An account of a historical perspective about the concepts of Education, of Art, and of Education through Art, and, further, of the educational practices shared by the School and by the Museum are essencial bases for the understanding of the Foundation pedagogical action and of the partnership it tries to preserve with the School institution. One hundred and forty-six students were selected for this experiment, all of them attending the 2nd and the 3rd Cycles of São Romão do Coronado Basic School, the centre of the so-called Vertical Group of Coronado and Covelas, located in Trofa township, in the district of Oporto. Starting from the specific analysis of the interaction of this School with the Foundation of Serralves, we concluded that it is necessary to rethink education policies, in such a way as to offer Artistic Education, in general terms, and more specifically to Education through Art, their real importance. All the areas involved should not be dissociated and underestimated in the whole range of the curriculum. We are in the presence of a real subservience of learning systems to economic systems, diverting them from their true mission of building up true citizens, a reality that is the source of numberless and very dangerous social and environmental problems to the world. In this research work we also privileged the witty perspectives of people who work at the Foundation of Serralves, namely Elvira Leite, the advisor for the Education Service, Cristina Camargo, the monitor of the yearly Creative Practice Workshop, Tomé Matos Ferreira and Carlos Carvalho, the two monitors of the seasonal workshop Registus of Nature in Serralves, and Sónia Oliveira, the responsible for the Library of the Contemporary Art Museum. It seems to us that the projects with Schools suggested by the Foundation are positive initiatives. However, it would be necessary a higher investment of the Foundation in terms of the implementation of direct contacts with the School and the community. This way, the prevention of School abandonment and of social exclusion would be much more effective.

O objectivo deste estudo foi determinar o estado actual da Educação Artística e, em particular, o da Educação pela Arte, em Portugal, através do estudo da sua implementação na Escola e no Serviço Educativo da Fundação de Serralves. Através, ainda, do desenvolvimento do projecto com escolas 2005-2006, Retratos, proposto por este mesmo serviço. O traçado de uma perspectiva histórica acerca dos conceitos de Educação, de Arte e de Educação pela Arte, e das práticas educativas partilhadas pela Escola e pelo Museu, constituem bases imprescindíveis para a compreensão da acção pedagógica da Fundação e da parceria que procura manter com a instituição escolar. Cento e quarenta e seis alunos da Escola Básica dos 2º e 3º Ciclos de São Romão do Coronado, sede do Agrupamento Vertical de Coronado e Covelas, situada no concelho da Trofa, distrito do Porto, foram seleccionados para esta experiência. Deste modo, partindo do estudo específico do caso da Fundação de Serralves e desta Escola, concluímos que é necessário repensar as políticas educativas, por forma a atribuir à Educação Artística, em geral, e à Educação pela Arte, em particular, a sua verdadeira importância, cujas áreas constituintes não devem ser dissociadas ou diminuídas em relação às outras. Assistimos, sem dúvida, a uma subserviência dos sistemas de ensino em relação aos sistemas económicos, afastando-os da sua verdadeira missão de formar integralmente os indivíduos, o que tem criado inúmeros e muito graves problemas no mundo, quer a nível social, quer a nível ambiental. Neste estudo, privilegiámos, também os testemunhos de pessoas que trabalham na Fundação de Serralves, nomeadamente o de Elvira Leite, consultora do Serviço Educativo, Cristina Camargo, monitora da oficina anual Espaço Prática Criativa, Tomé Matos Ferreira e Carlos Carvalho, monitores da oficina sazonal Registos da Natureza em Serralves, e Sónia Oliveira, bibliotecária da Biblioteca do Museu de Arte Contemporânea. Pensamos que os projectos com Escolas propostos pela Fundação de Serralves são iniciativas positivas. Contudo, seria necessário um maior investimento da Fundação nos contactos directos com as Escolas e com as comunidades. Desta forma, a prevenção do abandono escolar e da exclusão social seriam, na nossa perspectiva, muito mais eficazes.
