During the last decades, the flexible road pavements have been subjected to a more intense and aggressive traffic, which has often caused their premature degradation. In order to support these high solicitations, it is pertinent to improve the structural and functional behaviour of the pavements. This can be achieved by improving the properties of the subgrade, the granular and the bituminous layers, or by increasing the thickness of the granular and bituminous layers. Presently, a significant part ofthe investments on the Portuguese road network is used in the pavements' rehabilitation, which is usually done without changing neither the subgrade nor the granular layers. Thus, this study, related to the bituminous mixtures' behaviour, is justified, because of their decisive influence on the structural and functional performance of the new pavements and ofthe pavements' overlays. The main aim of this work was to contribute to the study of the bituminous mixtures' behaviour through the characterisation of their components, namely the bituminous mastic and the aggregate-mastic bond. Moreover, it was intended to develop a heterogeneous microstructural model of prevision of the bituminous mixtures' behaviour, based on the characteristics oftheir components. Initially, the knowledge conceming the bituminous mixtures' behaviour, the bituminous mastic and the aggregate-mastic bond was synthesised. It was also analysed the presence of water in the bituminous mixtures and the bitumen ageing, due to their influence on the aggregate-mastic bond. The experimental work consisted in the study of the bituminous mastic's composition and behaviour, in the implementation of tests to study the aggregate-mastic bond, in the evaluation of the mastic's influence on the bituminous mixtures' behaviour and in the analysis ofthe developed tests' reliance. Finally, based on the fundamental characteristics of the mastic and the aggregate-mastic bond, it was developed a heterogeneous microstructural model to predict the bituminous mixtures' behaviour. With the results ofthis work, it was intended to analyse the bituminous mastic's composition and to evaluate the influence that the bituminous mixtures' composition and the test's conditions have on the behaviour of the mastic, the aggregate-mastic bond and the bituminous mixtures. The experimental tests' results were also used to calibrate the developed heterogeneous microstructural model, so as to predict the bituminous mixtures' behaviour. With this model, it was intended to study the distribution of tensions and extensions in the bituminous mixtures, as well as their cracking. For the studied conditions, it was possible to conclude that the mastic has a bigger influence on the bituminous mixtures' behaviour than the aggregate-mastic bond. The mastic's composition significantly influenced the bituminous mixtures' behaviour. The use of harder bitumen and limestone filler improved the bituminous mixtures' performance, as well as the bitumen's ageing before the mixture's compaction. The tests developed in this work could adequately evaluate the properties of the mastic and the bituminous mixtures with fewer costs and faster. The model of prevision of the bituminous mixtures' behaviour, developed in this work, allowed the analysis of the places with maximum tensions and extensions, where the bituminous mixtures' rupture preferably occurs.
