The following doctoral thesis, based on the Descriptive Translation Studies, will examine the way in which cultural elements are subtitled in movies. This is a subject yet to be investigated in the translation of audiovisual texts between Portuguese and Spanish cultures. In order to approach this topic, we gathered a corpus formed by seven of Almodovar’s films, between All About My Mother (1999) – which began his internationalization and acknowledgement by both the critics and the audience –, and I’m So Excited (2013), his last one, dating from when we began this investigation. Inspired by Toury (1995) and the Descriptive Translation Studies applied to subtitling, we focused our research on the operational norms, particularly in the textual-linguistic ones, in order to identify and analyze the translation techniques used to transpose the Cultural Elements to Portuguese. However, since the translators’ options when translating Cultural Elements are influenced by external circumstances, we decided to put the research into context, incorporating the preliminary and initial norms. Within the preliminary norms, we addressed issues such as the relationships between both the source and the target cultural systems, the reception of cinema in Portugal and the stage of education and investigation in Audiovisual Translation in Portugal. The initial norm will clarify if the target text is more inclined to the norm of acceptability, making it closer to the target culture, or falling towards adequacy, preserving more of the Cultural Elements which bind them to its source culture. We hope this work contributes to a greater knowledge of Audiovisual Translation between the two languages and cultures addressed. We believe that the conclusions drawn are only valid to the corpus we examined. However, it would be of great interest to be able to confirm or disprove them, by studying another corpus with the same linguistic combination. Therefore, we must be cautious when generalizing or extrapolating conclusions, since there are no studies in this area with this linguistic and cultural combination.
