Gênero e saúde mental: algumas interfaces

Abstract

Este working paper, que tem base em pesquisa bibliográfica, trata de algumas interfaces entre o gênero e o campo da saúde mental. Por exemplo, as iniquidades entre homens e mulheres, decorrentes das relações de gênero, têm participação na etiologia dos adoecimentos. Mas, no território da saúde mental, há outras dimensões sobre as quais as relações de gênero exercem influência. Ocorre que estas interfaces nem sempre são notadas. Assim, gênero também está presente: nos dados epidemiológicos psiquiátricos que mostram, de maneira global, uma sobre representação feminina nas estatísticas e dispositivos de saúde mental; na diversidade dos diagnósticos que elencam sintomas e transtornos mais comuns para mulheres (como a ansiedade, a depressão ou a anorexia nervosa) e para homens (transtornos devido ao uso nocivo de substâncias psicoativas ou distúrbios antissociais); na formulação e execução de políticas públicas de saúde mental, tanto nos documentos oficiais quanto nas práticas de seus trabalhadores; nas ações de indústrias farmacêuticas. Um olhar de gênero no território do “mental” serve não apenas para reconhecer as diferenças quanto à saúde, mas, sobretudo, questionar as disparidades e assimetrias entre homens e mulheres.

This working paper is based on a bibliographic research and discusses about gender and mental health. For example, the inequities between men and women due to gender relations have participation in the etiology of illnesses. But, in the territory of mental health, there are other dimensions on which gender relations influence. It happens that they are not always noticed. Thus, gender is also present: in psychiatric epidemiological data show that, globally, the overrepresentation women in statistics and mental health services; the diversity of diagnoses that list most common symptoms and disorders for women (such as anxiety, depression or anorexia nervosa) and men (disorders due to harmful use of psychoactive substances or antisocial disorders); in the formulation and implementation of public policies on mental health, both in official documents and in the practices of their workers; the actions of pharmaceutical companies. A gender perspective in the territory of “mental” is useful not only to recognize the differences about health, but, above all, to question the disparities and inequalities between men and women.
