Júlio José de Brito: o arquitecto invisível

Abstract

A vasta obra de Júlio de Brito (1896-1965) contribuiu para a construção da imagem da cidade do Porto na primeira metade do século XX. No entanto, apesar das dezenas de obras construídas, Júlio de Brito é hoje um arquitecto invisível. O presente trabalho aborda a vida e obra deste arquitecto, de forma a perceber o seu contributo para o panorama cultural da época. Numa primeira fase é estudado o contexto compreendido entre o final do século XIX e a primeira metade do século XX. Os acontecimentos entre a I República e a emergência do Estado Novo pretendem contextualizar a época onde Júlio de Brito desenvolve a maior parte da sua obra. A segunda fase é relativa à análise da relação de Júlio de Brito com a Escola de Belas Artes do Porto. Num primeiro momento é estudado o periodo da sua formação e respectivas infuências, para depois se analisar o seu contributo enquanto docente da Escola de Belas Artes. A parte final, a mais relevante, incide sobre a análise da obra, partindo do geral para o particular. De uma forma geral, são abordados os clientes e as parcerias mais significativas. A especificidade deste capitulo relaciona-se com uma selecção dos casos de estudo considerados mais relevantes, após uma filtragem segundo os critérios autoria, ano do projecto e tipologia .

The vast work of Júlio de Brito contributed to build the image of the city of Porto, in the troubled first half of the twentieth century. With dozens of buildings, Júlio de Brito is currently an invisible architect of his time. The present work is about the life and work of this architect, in order to understand his contribution to the cultural panorama of that period. First, it will be studied the context between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The events between the First Republic and the appearance of the Estado Novo intend to contextualize the time when Júlio de Brito developed most of his work. Then it will be analyzed the relationship between the architect and the School of Fine Arts of Porto. Firstly, the period of his formation and the influences that he receives and, later, the contribution that he gives as a teacher of this same institution. The final part and most relevant, focuses on the analysis of his work, going from a general point of view to a particular one. In general, clients and the most significant partnerships are addressed. The specificity of this chapter is related to the selection of the most relevant case studies, after filtering according to the authorship, the year of the project and typology criteria.
