Resumo(s)In this volume, which is a tribute to Jean-Jacques Wunenburger, our article analyses the relation between imagination and educational rationality based on some texts of the referred author on education. Therefore, we would like to stress the author's studies on education and reflect upon promising perspectives that can also he considered innovative that had a relevant impact on our work in the field of philosophy of education owing to the dialog Wunenburger establishes with symbols, myths and metaphors. This article includes two parts: the first one discusses education as a means to self-development (Bildung) of the human soul; and the second aims at understanding the role of imagination in education. We believe that an integral education should recognise the imaginative instance in order to avoid ideology or a philosophy that is unilaterally rationalist that puts at stake aims of education. Then, such education should develop the day face (animus - Jung) and the night face (anima - lung) towards "a bi-frons" (Jean-Jacques Wunenburger) humanity.
