Eyre.
margem do cânone literário europeu.
deste romance e constituem objectivos fulcrais desta dissertação. Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys was written between 1957 and 1966 as a fictional response to the colonial world presented in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. Rhys wanted to write a novel which displayed the reality behind the tragic end of the creole Bertha Mason; she accomplished it through her portrait (and to a certain extent, her self-portrait) of Antoinette (Bertha) Mason. Thus the readers get in touch with the creole world – a world Rhys knew so well since she was part of it, and the hardship experienced by the British colonies in this late period of the colonial Empire. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how the female self constantly seeks to find a „stolen‟ identity, of which women had for long been deprived of – socially, politically and emotionally. As stated by Simone de Beauvoir in her famous book, patriarchal society regards women as a „second sex‟; in this novel Jean Rhys, through her protagonist Antoinette, is engaged in a mission – to restore the true identity of her main female character. As it will be discussed in this dissertation, identity is clearly a crosscutting theme in the work of Jean Rhys. WSS, Rhys‟ last novel, was acclaimed by critics as the culmination of a literary career often developed at the margins of the literary and critical canon. Here the writer reveals her syntony with various twentieth century literary movements and theories, from modernism to the onset of post-modernism, issues of gender, feminism and post-colonialism. This novel is also a fundamental text to study the autobiographical genre, since memory and its revisitation play here a central role, and for that reason they are key words in this dissertation. |
