The blood types determination is essential to perform safe blood transfusions. In emergency situations it is administrated the “universal donor” blood type. However, sometimes, this blood type can cause incompatibilities in the transfusion receptor. This work presents a solution that allows the automatic determination of human blood types, the ABO and Rh, in less than five minutes, being adequate to emergency situations. In this context, it is presented an innovative, systematic and global methodology which allows the automatic, fast and effective realization of pre-transfusion tests, enabling the administration of compatible blood transfusions to the transfusion receptor. To support this methodology are developed three complementary mechatronic prototypes, built to meet specific goals for each of them. In prototype 1 are met the test conditions and operation of the system; in prototype 2 are met the mixing and brightness conditions; and in prototype 3 are incorporated all the necessary components to obtain a solution close to the final system to be later “industrialized”. The prototypes are portable and of low cost and could be used in remote locations. To operate with the mechatronic system developed and obtain automatically the test results, it is developed a computer application which allows the image acquisition, processing and analysis, based on Computer Vision algorithms, in Machine Learning algorithms and in deterministic algorithms. The Machine Learning algorithms enable the classification of occurrence, or absence, of agglutination in the mixture (blood/reagents) and enable a more reliable and safe methodology. The data obtained in the tests is stored in a database. The methodology developed is independent of the prototype used and allows the administration of a compatible blood type in emergency situations, avoiding the rupture of the “universal donor” blood type and reducing the occurrence of human errors in the transfusion practice. |
