Mathematics is a subject common to many courses, including Engineering, and is considered essential in the training of all future engineers. However, the high rates failure of engineering students in the mathematics-based curricular units and, more specifically in the failure of learning mathematical concepts is a worldwide phenomenon. In the Portuguese Higher Education, it is clear that there is a lack of research concerning the inclusion of psychographic factors to explain the mathematical concepts learning. Recognizing this gap in the Portuguese research, this project aims to identify, explore and analyse which psychographic factors influence the mathematics literacy and the learning of mathematical concepts, in particular, in the engineering context. Considering this problem, this study tried to provide answers to a set of research questions related to the factors that influence learning mathematical concepts in Engineering courses. Different techniques and tools were used (document analysis, questionnaire, focus group), with a mixed methodological approach – exploratory descriptive study combining, in different stages, different techniques of collecting and analysing quantitative and qualitative data. The main results highlight the fact that Mathematics is perceived by the students as being extremely relevant for the Engineering courses and for the development of their future career. In addition, students' motivation for learning mathematical concepts is influenced by the perception that they have over Mathematics and, in the specific case of Engineering, its applicability in their future occupation context. The main contributions of this study focus in the validation of a questionnaire with measurement scales of three psychographic factors – the perceived importance of Mathematics, anxiety and self-efficacy – referenced in the literature as influencing the mathematical literacy and the learning of mathematical concepts in Engineering courses; the development of an explanatory model of the success of Engineering students in Mathematics-based curricular units with the inclusion of the aforementioned psychographic variables, demographic variables and variables related to the academic course. The variables that were found to be statistically significant were the score of admission to higher education, the score obtained in the national math exam, the students’ approval in Calculus and Algebra courses, (the first time they attended the courses), the anxiety and self-efficacy. |
