onde a pressão humana é diminuta.
pertencentes à ordem Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera e Trichoptera.
Freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity are being seriously threatened by human activities. One of the species that received a special attention about their conservation is the pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera (Linnaeus, 1758). This species, with a complex life cycle and highly sensitive to human pressures has a wide distributional range that includes the entire Holarctic zone. Given their decline in the last decades, M. margaritifera is internationally protected. In Portugal, M. margaritifera populations still exist but only in sites with a very low human pressure. In this study we did not find pearl mussels in the river Cávado. In rivers Neiva, Terva and Beça populations have a low density and showed signs of aging, where more than 70% of the individuals were bigger then 80mm. Functional populations with evidence of recruitment were found in rivers Paiva, Mente, Rabaçal and Tuela. In rivers Rabaçal and Tuela populations with high densities were found. In general, there are significant differences in shell length of M. margaritifera along all rivers, and this species preferred areas near the banks with low depth, sandy and gravel sediments, high degree of cover by riparian vegetation and a wide range of current velocities. The Salmo truta, host fish for M. margaritifera, was present in all rivers. All rivers had also a high number of insects sensitive to water pollution belonging to the Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera orders. Margaritifera margaritifera populations from lower latitudes, such as those in Portugal, have great importance for the conservation of their genetic diversity and is important for species evolution. Since many threats (e.g. fires, climate change, presence of weirs and dams) were identified in these rivers, conservation measures that include, for example, reforestation and increase connectivity should be implemented urgently. |
