Social mobility has the important task of promoting ways and possibilities of exchange, rising or lowering that an individual has in the context who is establishing their relationships. For afro-brazilian students, undergraduate education is an investment, because it represents opportunities for social mobility through most promising careers as personal fulfillment, social status, social rights and wage returns. The main objective of this research is to analyse the perceptions and discourses of the afro-brazilians residing in the city of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, on social mobility through higher graduation. The theoretical assumptions that guided this research work are based on social mobility, according to the authors: Jannuzzi (2000), Osório (2004), Pastore and Silva (2000), Scalon (1999), Sorokin (1927), Tajfel (1981). We have tried to identify their expectations, find out how this process occurred and what factors contributed to mobility. In this sense, we assess as were their conditions, the trajectory in the graduation course and characterized the lifestyle of these people. We analyzed the type of social mobility on the current occupancy of the children in relation to parental occupation (intergenerational mobility). Furthermore, we observed the current occupation of the respondent in relation to the initial occupation (intragenerational mobility). Based on the epistemological assumptions of social constructionism, in methodological terms we used semistructured interviews (Triviños, 1987). We selected 34 professionals living in the city, who agreed to participate in the survey, which identified themselves as black, with a university degree, exercising or having exercised the function in the area who have graduated and signed an informed consent form. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis (Boyatzis, 1998; Braun & Clarke, 2006; Joffe & Yardley, 2004; Maydell, 2010) and discourse analysis (Burr, 1995, Nogueira, 2001).The results showed the existence of intra-generational and intergenerational social mobility. Most respondents got mobility through top level public tender. Furthermore, they are characterized by a life path permeated with great difficulties. Being from an ethnic group historically discriminated against, mostly descended from poor families. Given these conditions of vulnerability, they started work very early. In undergraduate study many of them needed to work to support themselves and their families. With all the experiences presented and skills acquired in higher graduation, our respondents were constructing values of knowledge, determination, greater competitiveness, qualifying for the labor market However, social mobility do not eliminate racial discrimination, although it may reduce it. In this field one can speak of asymmetries that are socially embedded and therefore there is great difficulty in being deconstructed. Currently, discrimination is, in most cases, symbolic, operating in an subtle way. The contribution of each interviewee in relation to identity strategies group membership emphasizes the need for self-overcoming of each member, creating a self-image and the search for references that are success stories, such as them. In sum, we found that empowerment is a strong strategy for the group that needs affirmation, fostering a positive social identity, which can also be obtained through education. It is also in this field of public affirmation and political awareness that this thesis is putted, that the government develop public policies that minimize the social and racial inequalities still existing, contributing to greater social equality
