The main purpose of this study is to know the parents' opinions about playing and free time activities of children who attend Elementary School from 1st to 4th school year in urban areas. More specifically, we are trying to know parents' opinions about the act of playing of their children and the playing habits between parents and children; to recognize how parents occupy children's free time when they are at home, to know family options about possible places to visit with children during their free time, to understand about family options to do supervised leisure-time activities outside school and also to get to know parents' opinions about "Enrichment Curriculum Activities" in Elementary School. In order to achieve our purpose, we designed a questionnaire, which was completed by 314 parents / educational caretakers of children aged 6 to 10 who attend four Elementary Schools in Castelo Branco. We concluded that children's playing is valued by the families and is understood as a right and a pleasant activity, which enables their development. The mothers' educational level is reflected in their opinions and statistically significant differences can be found when we compare the opinions of mothers with different school levels. Mothers with higher school levels consider that playing must be part of their children’s education. They also value playful activities in the learning process more than other mothers and believe that playing may contribute greatly to the development of stronger relationships between parents and their children. Mothers with higher school levels are also those who play with their children in a more varied way. They say they take their children to places where they can play and they are the ones whose children attend supervised leisure-time activities outside school more frequently. In what concerns the “Enrichment Curriculum Activities” in Elementary School, most children do them. The mothers with lower school levels are the ones who mostly say that the school schedule until 17:30 meets their family needs to occupy their children’s free-time. In what concerns this aspect, the statistical differences are quite significant if we compare these opinions to the ones of the mothers with higher school levels.
