significativo diálogo luso-brasileiro.; This thesis analyses the circulation of the literary work by Brazilian poet João Cabral de Melo Neto in Portugal between late 1940s and mid-2000s. From a broad perspective, crossing both the public and private lives, it articulates biographical and literary episodes that encouraged the reception of his
works by critics, writers, poets, and intellectuals. Correspondence, book exchange, and critical reviews outline a map of relationships to demonstrate how João Cabral’s poet persona and his body of works were received by the social and cultural spectrum to which he belonged, and how they have impacted Portuguese cultural life, spanning through three phases of reception — from 1940 to 1960; in the 1960s;
and from 1970 to 2010. By relating both the critical process as well as the aesthetic impacts that come
mainly from critics, poets or poet-critics, this analysis focuses on the development of a line of interpretative
criticism seen in press media, later canonized by the university, while identifying how the author’s name
is textually claimed, as a poetical statement, in a vast array literary production by Portuguese poets.
This work is divided into parts that lay out the corpus collected during the bio-bibliography and
documental research, based on many published, unpublished or dispersed literary texts and paratextual
items (letters, manuscripts, book inscriptions, interviews, and public statements) from various sources,
including archives, literary estates, and libraries. The analysis of these enunciative structures — which
have documented João Cabral’s critical reception — indicate the influence of his “lesson of poetry” on
the creative responses of writers, specifically in the works of Alexandre O’Neill, Sophia de Mello Breyner
Andresen, Eugénio de Andrade and Gastão Cruz. This exchange has allowed for a great impact of the
author’s works in Portugal and has in many ways influenced the presence of Brazilian literature in
Portuguese literature, while underlying a broad and significant dialogue within the Luso-Brazilian culture.

Título: Nos meandros da interpretação simultânea: a anáfora pronominal num corpus bidirecional (PT>EN, EN>PT) de discursos do Parlamento Europeu
Autor: Correia, Ana Teresa Varajão Moutinho Pereira
interpretação do antecedente e do pronome (tradução, elipse, reconfiguração morfossintática e
entidade nomeada, competição; dos pronomes: função sintática, categoria morfológica, distância;
A análise descritiva
anafóricas foi semelhante nas duas direções linguísticas.; Pronouns generate anaphoric chains that establish syntactic and semantic dependency between
two or more terms. This may require an additional reception and/or production effort on the part
of interpreters in a situation where their total processing capacity is limited. With repercussions in
terms of textual cohesion, problems in restoring anaphoric links may affect the intelligibility of a
speech. Thus, this thesis aims to analyze how anaphoric chains are interpreted from Portuguese
to English and vice-versa in simultaneous interpreting. To this end, a bidirectional PT>EN, EN>PT
corpus composed of speeches delivered in plenary sessions of the European Parliament and their
interpretations was compiled, and all occurrences of personal and relative pronouns were
extracted. Upon analyzing the occurrences, interpreting procedures (translation, ellipsis,
morphosyntactic reformulation and omission) were identified for the antecedent and the pronoun.
These two elements constituting the anaphoric chain were also classified, in their original language,
according to eight linguistic-discourse properties (of the antecedents: grammatical relation, named
entity status, competition; of the pronouns: grammatical relation, morphological class, distance;
and of the speeches: speed and lexical diversity). The corresponding frequency data were analyzed
separately and crossed with those of the interpreting procedures. The results indicate that
antecedents tend to be translated in both language directions and that pronouns tend to be
morphosyntactically reformulated, in the PT>EN direction, and omitted, in the EN>PT direction.
The pronoun thus appears as the most voluble link in the anaphoric chain, which is also reflected
in its dependence vis-à-vis the antecedent. In fact, it was observed that most cases of omission of
the antecedent co-occurred with omission of the pronoun. The crossing of the frequency data
further suggests that some of the linguistic-discourse properties and/or the linguistic direction may
influence the use of interpreting procedures. Trough descriptive analysis of the corpus, it was
possible to typify the lexical and morphosyntactic transformations operated by the interpreters in
each interpreting procedure, which displayed a wider range of variation in the PT>EN direction than
in the opposite direction. Overall, however, the retrieval rate of anaphoric chains was similar in
both language directions.

https://hdl.handle.net/1822/79900
Título: On sap and blood: family trees, literary legacies and systems of kinship in contemporary representations of queer families
Autor: Carvalho, Ana Sofia Bessa
Resumo: Through a comparative reading of several literary works, while also evoking other art forms, namely
photography, this thesis will address matters of queer kinship, inheritance and legacy in contemporary
representations of families in the context of the United States of America, namely in two novels Middlesex
(2002) by Jeffrey Eugenides (1960-) and The Great Believers (2018) by Rebecca Makkai (1978-), a play,
The Inheritance (2018) by Matthew Lopez (1977-) and a memoir, The Argonauts (2015) by Maggie
Nelson (1973-). This comparative reading is established through a dialogue between a set of metaphors
that permeate the case studies (ghosts, family trees) while also exploring how the discourses about queer
bodies and families have been reshaped and challenged over the last twenty years. Looking at families,
in the context of queer theories and kinship studies, is perceived as a way of analysing how
heteronormative norms shape both the home and the social, as well as how queer individuals have been
producing both alternative but also assimilationist kinship structures that guarantee structures for safety
and care. Ultimately, this thesis intends to open up a discussion about how queer families have been
represented in literature and other art forms, how these representations reinforce or challenge notions of
nuclear families and how these are shaped by social and gender norms, and how one generation of artists
can contribute, not only to the representation of their times but also to a transgenerational legacy of

https://hdl.handle.net/1822/79513
insuficiente.
do PMQP simples, pressupondo que o material linguístico adquirível corresponde à baseline
concretamente disponibilizada ao falante no meio específico em que a adquire.; The present study, dedicated to Portuguese as a HL in Germany, deduces some Portuguese past verb
tenses with no direct equivalence in German as a possibly vulnerable linguistic domain, with aspect being
of distinct relevance in both languages. Together with the analysis of spontaneous speech in Portuguese
as a HL, production tasks are applied: a forced-choice test, aiming to observe mastery of the temporal aspectual opposition of pretérito perfeito (PP) and pretérito imperfeito (PI) in combination with Vendler’s
(1967) aspectual classes, considering the hypothesis of cross-linguistic influence of the German dominant
(majority) language on the Portuguese HL; and an acceptability test, focusing on grammatical judgment
of pretérito mais-que-perfeito (PMQP) utterances, considering the input hypothesis. Within these
production tasks, a pseudo-longitudinal approach is made regarding 56 (mono- and bilingual)
participants, tracing the acquisitional path from infant initial state ( =8;47 years old) to the presumed
adult final state ( =28;00 years old), whilst also considering the hypothesis of intergenerational influence.
The analysis of the spontaneous speech corpus reveals a correct use of PP and PI tenses in, respectively,
above 95% and 76% of occurrences, with residual individual intersubstitutions being principally made
when associated with the aspectual class of states, which is still being acquired by the child groups tested,
but then shown to have been attained at adult age. Concerning the combination of the PI with the
aspectual class of achievements, some bilingual adults significantly differ from their monolingual peers,
revealing difficulties in admitting durativity associated with telic predicates. Except for this condition, in all
of the remaining combinations of PP/PI with vendlerian aspectual classes tested the differences found
are solely due to age and not to type of speaker. In the grammaticality judgment test, the PMQP simples
stands out as the condition which appears to cause difficulties to some (adult) bilingual speakers,
although, individually, total scores are met also within this group. Overall results of this study contradict
the hypothesis of heritage speakers’ incomplete acquisition, admitting occurrences of individual attrition.
With cross-linguistic or intergenerational influence being discarded in this study, it is argued for the
missing-input-hypothesis (Pires & Rothman, 2009b) in what concerns mastery of PMQP simples,
presupposing that acquirable input equates the specific baseline provided to the speaker in the particular
setting in which acquisition takes place.

Autor: Ewerton, Jane Maria Bastos
mostrar de forma pedagógica e que, segundo ela, cabia principalmente às mulheres modificar.; The themes underlying this work, gender issues and the role of women, have mobilized different arts and
areas of study, with literary art being one of them. Inserted within the scope of the Sciences of Literature,
this doctoral thesis has the more specific purpose of studying the political-literary career and the poetic work
of the late Victorian writer Julia Augusta Webster (1837-1894), in the broader context of 19th century
English culture. Bibliographic research and textual analysis are the methods used for the development of
this work, whose purpose is to explore Webster's critical approach to gender politics and the detailed
representation of women and the feminine that she makes in her poetry (1860 -1890). The results of this
research on Webster reveal, firstly, her extraordinary ability to reconcile family, her writing and social
activism, and, secondly, her invaluable contribution in the literary sphere, whose work is distinguished by
the innovative use it makes of irony and realism, as well as the deep capacity for psychological analysis of
the speakers that it portrays. As the title of this work suggests (Picture, Performance and Politics), and it is
later centrally argued through its operational concepts, her many ‘portraits’ are mainly of a pictorial,
dramatic and political nature.
This original work of hers is also confronted with the work of the other poets of the period, including
Tennyson, the Brownings, the Rossettis, and also Mathilde Blind or Amy Levy, in order to highlight the
aspects in common and, especially, the distinctive features that characterize it. It is also shown that,
through her translations, essays, literary reviews and poetic production, Webster sought to combat the
prevailing patriarchal ideology, thus influencing a change in behaviour in women and inspiring new writers.
In her memorable poems, she created contemporary characters like Eulalie and Agnes, who represent
different types of Victorian women, in an unconventional way. But she also recreated mythological
characters like Medea and Circe, removing their traditional negative connotation and assigning them a
positive and active role, thus suggesting a better understanding and appreciation of the feminine, in the
historical scope as well. Her poetic work, in particular, exposes a gender problem, where the woman herself
sometimes appears as the direct culprit for her failure, falling short of her real potential. A reality that
Webster tried to show in a pedagogical way, and that she believed was mainly up to women to modify.
