dc.description.abstract | The COVID-19 pandemic, emerging in early 2020, has significantly disrupted the global economy, introducing challenges that the modern economy had not yet faced. Consequently, e commerce has emerged as an alternative to mitigate some of the main issues caused by the pandemic, namely restrictions on the movement of people in public spaces which made commercial transactions in conventional forms more difficult. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to analyze the impact of the pandemic in the evolution of e-commerce focusing on five countries of different geographical locations and with distinct economic and political features: Canada, Colombia, the United States, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The literature on this topic is still scarce due to the fact that the pandemic is a recent phenomenon. In this regard, it is hoped that this study will contribute to bring additional knowledge on the impact of COVID-19 on e-commerce. The study explores how the number of COVID-19 cases, the government prevention and containment measures, and the unemployment rates impacted the evolution of e-commerce. The results suggest that government measures had a significant and positive impact on online sales, thus suggesting that the pandemic crisis may have accelerated the transition to digital commerce as a safe and convenient alternative to conventional transactions. On the other hand, it was found that the number of COVID-19 cases and the evolution of the unemployment rate did not appear to contribute to the evolution of e-commerce. This study provides valuable insights for future research on e-commerce in the context of global pandemic crises; however, it recommends exploring other econometric models and inclusion of a larger sample of countries for a more robust and detailed analysis. | por |
