lavagens múltiplas e solidez à fricção a seco e a húmido.
Nowadays, there is a notorious evolution in the textile market which seeks to adapt itself to the needs that constantly arise. As such, the sector of fabric processing, in which dyeing is included, is one of the most impacting in the textile industry, due to the large amount of water and chemical products used throughout this process. To overcome this problem, the market has shown a growing interest in adding value to textile materials with natural products. Natural dyeing presents itself as an excellent alternative for the implementation of sustainable practices in the textile chain, since it uses natural dyes which are renewable, biodegradable and non-toxic. Thus, this study’s main goal consists of the optimization of dyeing with natural dyes which obtain satisfactory results regarding light fastness, fastness to washing, fastness to multiple washings and fastness to both dry and wet rubbing. Aiming to achieve this, a dyeing process was optimized to obtain uniformly dyed textile substrates with the aforementioned fastness characteristics. In an initial stage, a natural dye obtained from mulberry leaves was chosen, and it was used in all the dyeing processes carried out in this study. Afterwards, the factors that would be altered during the dyeing process were studied. In order to increase the affinity between the textile fibres and the dye molecule, a cationization process was studied using quaternary ammonium salts. This was subsequently compared to a process using the mordant potassium alum and then the mordant sumac. Aiming towards the improvement of the results obtained, the possibility of increasing some post-dyeing steps was studied so as to improve the light fastness and the fastness to washing. The studies performed allowed the evaluation of the most noteworthy properties, such as colour yield, uniformity of the dyeing obtained, light fastness results and multiple wash fastness results. The analysis of these results revealed that the dyeing at alkaline pH, at a low temperature (30ºC), with 5% of the cationic fixative was the one which obtained the best results. |
