Lugares, redes e atores: o papel das ruínas na rede das aldeias históricas de Portugal

Abstract

Cada território é único, repleto de particularidades, com identidade própria, com orgânicas de desenvolvimento muito concretas, constituindo, por tal, um desafio para a Geografia. Como forma de responder às dificuldades no estudo dos territórios, foram sendo aplicados novos paradigmas e novas metodologias que têm permitido que esta ciência se adapte a novas questões que vão sendo colocadas assim como a novas formas de encarar o espaço. Neste sentido, e dada a diversidade de metodologias usadas ao longo dos anos, considerou-se, para este trabalho, que a Teoria do Ator-Rede ou originalmente, Actor-Network Theory, poderia constituir uma ferramenta de relevo, dada a sua crescente utilização pela Geografia a nivel internacional. Trata-se de uma abordagem teórica distinta face às abordagens convencionais relativas ao estudo do território e do social, que introduz como dimensão fundamental, os elementos não-humanos. Estes são igualmente importantes para a compreensão da realidade. Assim, este trabalho tem como objeto de estudo a Rede das Aldeias Históricas de Portugal, uma rede formada por 12 territórios, maioritariamente de cariz rural, cujo património histórico-cultural é de elevada importância. Não obstante tal relevância, e por força de condições inerentes à sua localização periférica, estes territórios foram perdendo população, e fruto do seu abandono, as ruivas tornaram-se, também elas, um elemento comum. Assim, e através do recurso à Teoria do Ator-Rede, e dada a abordagem que esta permite face à introdução dos elementos não-humanos, pretende-se, neste trabalho, perceber o papel da ruína na constituição e manutenção da Rede das Aldeias Históricas de Portugal e através dela, melhor compreender o território na qual esta se tem vindo a sedimentar.

Each territory is unique, full of particularities, with its own identity, with very particular way of development, and, as such, constitutes a challenge for Geography. As a way of responding to the challenges posed by the study of territories, new paradigms and new methodologies have been applied that have allowed Geography to adapt to new questions that appear as well as to new ways of looking at the environment. In this sense, given the diversity of methodologies used over the years, it was here considered that Actor-Network Theory could be a relevant tool given its increasing use by Geography at the international level. It is a distinct theoretical approach to the conventional approaches to the study of territory and the social, which introduces non-humans as key elements. According to this Theory they are equally important for understanding reality. Thus, the object of study of this thesis is the Network of Historical Villages of Portugal, a network made up of 12 territories, mostly rural, which historical and cultural heritage has a great importance. Notwithstanding such prominence, and by virtue of conditions inherent to their peripheral location, these territories have been losing population, and as a result of their abandonment, ruins became a common element in all of them. Thus, through the use of Actor-Network Theory, and given the possibility it allows of considering non-human elements, this thesis intends to understand the role of the concept of ruin in the constitution and maintenance of the Network of Historical Villages of Portugal and through it, to better understand the territory in which they have been established.
