The well-being is fundamental to promote people’s quality of life, improve their productivity and social interaction. The need for thermal comfort drove the development of technical building systems for indoor climatic control. The technical equipment for the heating, cooling, ventilation, and hot water preparation play a relevant role in the improvement of the interior climatic conditions, however, their excessive use led to an increase in the final energy consumption. The new EPBD Recast directive stipulates that, after 2020, building should be nearly zero energy buildings with reduced CO2 emissions. However, it is impossible to achieve this goal without acting in existing buildings. In order to verify how to achieve this goal, two case studies – a rehabilitation and a new construction projects of a single family building – were carried out using the ITeCons’ platform. The rehabilitation project case study focused on studying passive design solutions. It was verified that only with the improvement of the building construction solutions, the energy efficiency level raise two levels and the energy needs halved. In the new construction case study, technical building systems currently used were adopted, resulting in an energy efficiency level A. The Portuguese families usually choose boilers for hot water preparation and a multi-split equipment for cooling. These equipment have proved to be efficient solutions when combined with renewable energy systems, as thermal and electric, respectively. The boiler used just for heating is the national common practice. However, it was verified that when used also for hot water preparation, the energy efficiency increases up to its maximum energy class level, resulting in reduced energy consumption and annual costs. The needs for ventilation was also analysed by two solutions: self-regulating openings in the envelope and exhaust ducts, as well as mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (VMRC). It has been realised that the latter suits best buildings with nearly zero energy requirements, as the heat recovered from the air extraction is sufficient to meet those needs. The heating needs in the new construction were lower than those verified in the rehabilitation project. However, it was found that the implementation of the VMRC in the new building managed to slightly suppress the heating needs, and in the rehabilitated building, there were no differences. Therefore, it was concluded that an effective study of the building envelope, during the design phase, together with a conscious use of technical systems combined with the renewable energy sources, guarantee the higher energy efficient buildings, with attractive energy-related costs reductions.
