The debate concerning the question of the tolerance in our society, has always be present in various guises of human activity, but it was through the works of John Locke that it gained major philosophical advances, specifically, in the modern period, with the conceptualization around the civil society and of the State and the question of civilian's and religious spheres delimitation; that is a society of free men, whose primary objective is preserving and promoting temporary goods, as opposed, this is a society composed of free men, voluntarily gathered, whose primary objective is preserving and promoting the spiritual goods. The inquiry of foundations of tolerance appears this way as a consequence of the demarcation among those two typologies of societies. If, in the past, it was like this, today, the issue of the tolerance, as an fundamental value for the development of human relationships, is even more complex, given that there is a much more profound and greater interaction of ideas on a global scale. Not only are we considering the exchange of goods and services, but also, and above all, of human resources and their individual beliefs and values. The greatest challenge that crosses our societies and States is the administration of all the resulting diversity of that growing width of changes in the world. Multiculturalism is an established phenomenon in the majority of nations, where the co-existence of various lifestyles is never easy and frequently results in the outbreak of conflicts and ruptures. Tolerance appears, therefore, fundamental, with orientation of our actions and of the State politics, in a context not only different, as with different levels of complexity. It is of primary importance that we each have respect for our contemporary for that that he is, even if they portray characteristics alien to those of us, and no group or individual should judge themselves to be more valid and true than others. In this way, it is necessary to consider tolerance in this new format as a response to the ever increasing processes of social fragmentation of present day society.
