Volunteering is an activity that goes back to the earliest ancient civilizations, and over time has assumed an increasingly important role as it contributes greatly to the economic and social cohesion of any community. The practice of volunteering generates benefits for both the recipient and the volunteer, and obtaining these benefits, according to the motivations of individuals, is important for the volunteering experience to be satisfactory and they continue to practice it. Scientific research on the motivations of volunteering has shown that the reasons why individuals volunteer are varied, but in their genesis they may be purely altruistic, that is, simple concern for the welfare of others, or of a more selfish character, that is, in order to obtain its own benefits. Given this context, the present study sought to investigate the motivations of secondary and higher education students for volunteering, in order to understand whether or not there are motivational differences in the reasons for starting volunteering. In a sample of 220 secondary and tertiary students, 65 are currently volunteering and 154 students have abandoned this practice, especially due to lack of time. At the beginning of volunteering, there were both altruistic and selfish motives in these students. With this research, it was concluded that, in fact, there are differences in motivations between secondary and higher education students to start volunteering. The results showed that one of the differences is that higher education students place more importance on helping others and are more concerned with the group they support in volunteering than higher education students Secondary. |
